Re: Very rudimentary S-100 owners roster

While snooping around the Web for S-100 Deluxe photos, I came across a gorgeous dark cherry Deluxe in a response by Jeff to a December 2007 post titled "If Santa left a Guild under your Christmas tree?" So I PMed Jeff asking if he was his, thinking I would add him to the S-100 owners roster. He replied that, regrettably, it wasn't his and that he couldn't remember whose it was. A little more investigating gave me the answer -- it was the '73 S-100 Deluxe that Dreamlander bought in November 2007 and announced to us all under the post "My Dream Guild."

One of the responders to Dreamlander's post was Matsickma, who wrote "That S-100 Deluxe is a beauty and is one I would like to own." Two years later, Matsickma's "Always Wanted a S-100 Deluxe..." post in December 2009 announced the purchase of his own cherry '73 S-100 Deluxe. I responded to that post and never got that Deluxe out of my mind ... until last week when I picked up my nature boy '73 S-100 Deluxe.

Dreamlander, who hasn't posted in awhile, inspired Matsickma who inspired me. The question is, who will be next?

Interesting the shade differences between Dreamlander's and Matsickma's. Dreamlander's looks maroon or burgundy, and Matsickma's is red.

Re: Very rudimentary S-100 owners roster

I've been trying to figure out what finish is on my 71. In some instances it looks burgandy but when the light hits it it's almost a dark brown.
Does anyone have a list of what finishes were available during the early 70's??

Sounds like you might have a walnut finish, if they offered it in 1971.

My '74 Starfire is a "walnut," according to its label. It looks somewhat purple under certain lighting, and more brown other times. It is a dark finish, though and doesn't show a lot of grain. These pics are actually kind of a poor representation, color-wise; the guitar doesn't really have the orange hue that shows up here. I have a Jekyll and Hyde camera that randomly takes very color-accurate pics sometimes and is way off other times.

Black, white, cherry, walnut, natural (NB), sunburst.

Thanks Q! I imagine it's age and what it's been exposed to has something to do with the variations in the finish.
Also the ambient light will affect what your eye or the camera "see". Flourescent lights in particular vary in shade from greenish to reddish, the "daylight types" are the closest to actual sunlight. There is a "sunlight standard" for color comparison in the graphics industry. Even sunlight varies by time of day. Ever notice how much sharper things look when the light's at low angles in the morning, and how much greener trees look in late afternoon?
edit: Sorry, actually meant this to respond to Kakerlak's comment about his "Jekyll and Hyde" camera. In those two photos, if they were taken at the same time, it appears that just the change of the angle affected the part spectrum that was predominating (reflecting) when the camera took the pic 8)

It might also have something to do with who was on shift at Westerly that day.

I'll join the club!

'74 S-100C NB (as discussed with Qvart via PM on another forum, they seemed to make a run of darker. almost walnut colored NBs in '74. Label inside pot cavity reads "NB")

Nice Nature Boy there, Singin' Dave. And you're right, your Carved is a darker shade of nature boy like Qvart's '74. It really makes the carving pop in that photo. Maybe they were using a different type of stain in 1974.

Time to revise the list again, Thunderface. No more '96.

You sold it? Congrats ... and condolences. Sorry to see it go, but happy that you got it sold. Way to go, Knoxville.

Re: Very rudimentary S-100 owners roster

Well, I got the '96 out for a few minutes to tune it up and make sure everything was in order and then I plugged in the '73. In the end, I think I'll remain all vintage unless I come across a reissue S-100 with SD-1's.

Did you mean HB-1s? Didn't your '96 have SD-1s?

No. Mine had the 59NL/JBL Duncan set. Look at GAD's SF3 to see SD-1's.

I realize I'm missing the colors of the reissues for Drunkenguitarist, Fuzzfarmer and Guildzilla. Anyone know what they are? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
