Bad Music Decisions

Just came across this info while looking something up on the Ventures.
"The Ventures' website lists "[t]he drummer on Walk, Don't Run [as] Skip Moore, not Howie Johnson as many assume. Skip was given the choice of $25 or ¼ of the money the record would make for playing on the session. He took the $25".
What other poor choices, decisions have famous (or could have been famous) musicians made over the years? ( Besides flying in small planes)

I don't know a lot of stories like that, but Jeff Beck turned down the Rolling Stones... I'm not sure that was a bad music decision, but it was definitely a bad financial one.

Speaking of that, I remember Billy Joel having many regrets about his management from his early career. I think he was not alone, and a lot of stars from the '70s and '80s got handled badly by their managers.

How about when David Geffen and Clive Davis flipped the coin, and Geffen got Crosby, Stills and Nash, and Davis got the Byrds. It didn't exactly work out too badly for either one of them, but there sure was a clear winner there.

I'll add to this.. These weren't bad decisions for the guys I'm talking about, but I just wish they hadn't left their groups to go solo... These are the worst (to music, that is):

Sting leaving The Police
Peter Gabriel leaving Genesis
Neil Young leaving CSNY
Simon and Garfunkle doing their own things.

[edit] that's funny you mentined CSN, Sandy.

Worked out fine for Simon, not quite as well for Garfunkle - who had the idea of an acting career too.
I know the story is somewhat clouded through the years, but whatever Pete Best did to PO Paul & John, wasn't a great career move either.

Oh, you're absolutely right, TJ... I really meant it was bad for the music world when these guys split off... They've all done well for themselves, but could you imagine if, say, these groups had stayed together?

I'll just add that now that I'm back in a band again, it reminds me of why bands break up, and why I went for a long time playing solo.

How about Roger Waters leaving Pink Floyd (or did they leave him?)

It`s like being married to multiple wives, Sandy. Just remember, the bass player is always right...

Van Halen getting back together with david lee roth. Sure, they cut an album (made alot of money I'm sure) and went on half a tour (couldn't get along with roth) but my ears sure suffered from listening to roth's horrid voice on the radio.

The Who filling in Keith's seat with Kenney Jones.

Now, it's understandable; he was a friend, and the stuff he did with The Faces was great. But, he didn't have the cojones to assert his own personality when he joined, and just ended up being insipid and uninspired.
Imagine what might have been if they had tried Ginger Baker? :?

What do you guys think about Michael McDonald joining the Doobie Brothers?

I'll probably take some flak for this, but I really liked a lot of the music they put out together. I'm a huge Doobies fan, so I suppose I'm biased.

If you're saying you liked them better before, then 'll agree, chaz.

Really Jeff?

They always think I'm wrong (especially the lead singer) until they realize I'm right. You would think that they'd try to benefit from my experience (heck, I'm the only one with any band experience), but then you'd be wrong...

Elvis going into the Army, with the Colonel's blessing, was a horrible move. It took him years to come back in the music field.
