Yeah, actually that one didn't bother me anywhere near as much as some of these crazy ladder ones. As long as you remove the guy before dismantling the thing.What you see here actually IS a safety precaution. The steel plates are there to keep the dirt from caving in on top of the guy. The bucket is there to make sure of it. This is how you'd want it done if you were the one down in that pit.
That is preferred, and always used when you dig a fresh pit to do work in.... but when a city water main ruptures, a city block has no water, and traffic is being rerouted, you have to do whatever it takes to safely get the job done asap. I'd have no problem being either one.
