Congrats, Jeff, and happy birthday! That's one heck of a gift your wife gave you. Don't forget, my birthday is next month in case your wife is still feeling generous.

Welcome aboard, diggey!!!! That is, indeed, one heck of an entrance!! :)

Best of luck with your new GSR and enjoy it. Hope we see lots of you here on the board.

I will start with my ONLY complaint, which is they used the rubber spacer for the pickguard which reacted with the Nitro and left a black ring around the pickguard hole on the top. I take the guards off and this is so aweful looking. Why they did this is beyond me.
Gretsch did this for a while, and I believe went to felt spacers to fix.
Welcome to LTG! What a start!
The issue with the rubber spacer is something that our members who attend LMG III should address at LMG III ! It's definitely not nice. Old Guilds used felt spacers.

I have not seen this mentioned anywhere:

Is this a plywood or solid wood guitar?

thanks

I suspect it *might* be solid. I'll know for certain when I get my paws on mine.
It's just a suspicion based on conjecture.

As with many arch back maple Guilds, I'm gonna guess it is a laminated flamed maple back and sides. No one does laminated maple better than Guild, IMHO. ;)

I, now, defer back to the GSR T-500 aficionados. :)

and the top would be plywood also, or else they would be advertising solid, I guess...

The most common laminate on archtops is maple... right? I don't think I've seen anyone ask the question about the construction here before. If it is, then I've answered my own question in an earlier post on when will Guild be producing a carved archtop. What is it then ya'll ? Either way, one can argue the benefits of both as I'd take one any way I could get one :)

My former 1984 X-500 had a spruce top and I don't think that was carved, so I'm not so sure this is carved. LMG III will answer this question for sure.

What I hear from inside is laminate.

We still haven't received any spec sheet.

The GSR Starfire has a pressed and laminated spruce top and pressed and laminated maple back and sides so I would guess the T-500 would be the same. As far as I know all X-500 and T-500 and DE-400 and DE 500 were laminated woods.
What I wonder is how they make the mold to press and laminate the wood. Did they make a special mold just for 18-20 Starfires and a different mold for 25 T-500? I wouldn't think they would but I really don't know. How wide is the lower bout on the T-500?
Thanks John

If it's anything like the originals, it's all laminated - and I'm fairly sure they are. Good luck finding a solid, carved, American made archtop guitar for $4000.

I bought a new Gibson L-4CES in 2010 for $3400.00 It has a solid carved spruce top and a solid carved mahogany back and solid mahogany sides. It is a sweet guitar and I got it at a great price. I have seen used ones for less than 3000.00.
Thanks John

Hey Walter!
I'll email you some high res pics when it shows up.
Powerwagonjohn, glad you got the deal on the Gibson, but I don't see a lot of American made solid wood archtops floating around. Used doesn't have a dog in this fight. ;-)
In any case, the cheapest archtop I ever heard about was owned by a nurse I used to work with. Her dad pulled a D'Angelico out of someone's trash in Philly. She played it until she graduated college, then sold it and paid off her student loans.

Wish I had a dad like that! : lol :
