Closest I came was my wife finding two Waterford crystal flute champagne glasses in a discount store. They were discontinued. We got another four going to different stores of the same chain. Paid about 10%. We had six, and wound up with twelve. Dumb luck. I did buy my D 35 for $250. Would I have put $1100 into it if I'd paid $750 for it?

A roadie for St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, has a son-in-law living across the street. Chatting one day, he told me he's been investing in old and rare guitars. Can't play a lick, but believes in buy low and sell high.

I’ve heard similar tales of people trying for investments, ruining it for us players :(

Have you tried to sell Waterford lately? The generation that thought middle class households needed china, silver and crystal are finding out that their kids don't want it and no one else is paying very much.

Good luck to them. There is a reason my 401K doesn't have any guitars in it.

Hah, exactly! The fact they don’t play makes it even dumber.
There was a cautionary tale about someone who had invested in gold in the form of coins. Sometimes he would play poker and use the coins instead of chips. They were alleys redeemed but... Time comes to cash in on his investment and it had lost money and was worth about half what he expected. Condition is everything in collectable coins and often a factor in guitars as well.

If I were going to invest in guitars I would never play them and if provenance mattered I would get that notarized in writing :)

"Made to be played" does not seem compatible with investing although I'm sure the person who can prove they have Nick Drake's M-20 will disagree :)

Brick, that is a cool D-25. I like that dark burst. Those late 70's D-25's I believe are among Guild's finest sounding instruments. I had a 79 for a bit and it sounded heavenly. Great score!

While playing my D 35, I like scotch in a cut crystal tumbler, and champagne tastes better in a crystal flute.

My basement can attest to this -- we're storing a couple of sets of china that we have no use for to "keep it in the family", and there is still more out there. FWIW, the kiddo has no interest in any of this stuff, so at some point it all has to go.

Kids today aren't like we were. We have a complete set (for8) of bone China, given to us from great gramma (circa 1900) which neither of our two kids are interested in. ( 35 & 40 both married)

Flutes choke the bouquet which obviates anything they do to build up the mousse for those seconds before it subsides.

Reality has nothing to do with it, it's the experience. Kind of like thinking that headstock inlay makes a guitar sound better. No, but you may enjoy the experience more.

Well, its been a couple of weeks, and I still have a hard time not playing this guitar. I'm planning on taking it in to the shop (not the one I purchased it from) next week to get a full setup/assessment done. So far there have only been a couple of sort of wonky things that I have noticed so far:
1. Neck angle is off a little bit, not a troubling amount. Probably means that a neck reset has never been done.
2. Nut is a little....odd. The nut and saddle are obviously not original (bone, not micarta), but the nut in particular has kind of a "home made" look to it, with the high B and E strings sitting really low, at least according to the gauge that I used.

I'll be interested to see what the luthier has to say.

Tone on this guitar is amazing. -- I still grin like a fool every time I play it. The aftermarket pickup looks like a Baggs Lyric -- and the sound I get out through the amp is fantastic.

Its got scratches, dings and other bits of mojo, but then, so do I. This thing just rings -- its like hugging a Steinway, I feel the tone all the way down to my heels. It's my first Guild, and I know I'm not saying anything particularly new, but its all new to me.
