I take guitar lessons and often must park a distance from my teacher's studio, and have been caught more than once in the rain.
Covering the guitar case with plastic bags and securing them with elastics or bungee cords is less than satisfactory, and other than a waterproof gig bag (which I'd prefer not to buy, as I already have hard cases for my guitars), I've been unable to find simple slip-over waterproof soft covers for hard guitar cases.
As often happens, I can't find what I am looking for as I don't know the correct name for it when doing a search, so I'm wondering if anyone here knows of a source for such a thing, and could steer me to it?
Please and thanks,

gjmalcyon,
Thanks for the quick reply. The cases you've suggested look like they are both able to withstand Nuclear Holocaust and be taken on stage at The Lincoln Centre. Overkill for my purposes.
I just want a waterproof shell to keep the rain out, so I might just visit a fabric store, get some water-repellent material and sew up something.
Wouldn't be the first time I've had to make a thing I needed that essentially didn't already exist.

If contractor bags and U-Haul bags don't do it for you (and who could blame you!), how about investing a waterproof case? An added attraction is that they tend to stand up to United baggage handlers pretty well.

I just Googled waterproof guitar case and found several brands.

You might be on to something....call an upholstery shop and see if they can fabricate one.

I know you said you didn't want a gig bag, but that might be a cheap option. Buy a can of Scotch Guard and waterproof it.

The times I've had to carry a case in the rain, I kept it (as much as possible) under a golf umbrella with me. Kept it pretty dry.

A question - I thought most good hard shell cases ARE relatively waterproof, i.e. water is not likely to get into it to damage the guitar, assuming it's just a few raindrops and I'm not getting it really soaked. Is that wrong? Or am I missing the obvious and it's about keeping the case itself dry?

I think anything you'll find will likely cost more than a good quality soft case. Or just have a towel to wipe down your case....it will keep the case looking clean too.
Besides, taking a wet cover off the case and then putting it back on a hour later would bug me.

Thanks all for the suggestions.
It appears what I seek doesn't exist, so I'll likely just visit the fabric store, and make it myself ( although if a local tailor/ alteration shop's estimate is reasonable, I might just let them sew it by machine).
I've been giving it some thought and the design is simple: essentially it will be shaped like the corugated boxes guitars are often shipped in, with dimensions maximized to the outlines of my four different hardshell cases, so any one will fit.
Entry will be through a flap at the lower bout end that secures with Velcro and there will be a handle along the upper side.
No need for internal padding as the cases are already padded.
I'll letcha know how it works out.
Thanks again.

Gig bag is easier to carry and get an umbrella.

Take online lessons.

Several years ago I bought Gator-brand case covers for my dreadnaught cases off their website. They fit pretty tight. A pain going on and off, but waterproof they are! I got them due to the occasional torrents in TN during Kaufman Kamp...

Oh that’s exactly what the OP wants, someone has thought of it before. Good versatility in carrying options too, just like Guild’s padded gig bag I have. thats pretty sweet!

It appears this bag is mostly to cover a gig bag. The ad itself is in Indonesia. It says it is American made.
Read the reviews.

It seems Gator does not offer them any more.

Go to caseadillo.com. Very expensive...

Look up Colorado Case Covers, cannot seem to get to their site on my phone...
