Good luck figuring things out Dread.
My girlfriend lost her job when the bio-tech startup she was working at lost its funding. After weeks of frustration, I finally hired her as a retail clerk in my little running store for $7 an hour.
Might as well pay her as somebody else.
But what it is doing for her is keeping her busy and occupied while she job hunts, she has some grocery money coming in, and she feels useful. It's better than sitting around the house waiting for someone to call on the resume. I am lucky because I now have a PhD scientist organizing my inventory and orders, which is a huge upscale from recent college grads who tried hard but didn't have the comprehension to grasp the needs of the task. And she has ideas that we implement that are increasing some sales, which helps make up for our lost sales.
She is grossly underpaid for her skill set, but it helps me. I have also found a couple part-timers that she referred who in are also way, way over-qualified, but they appreciate the small income as well as the opportunity to contribute and stay busy while looking for career work.
Anyway, just a thought. Find someplace you can volunteer or work for a small amount just to keep your mind busy and network with people just walking through the doors.
