I have a Scan Optics laser beam unit that runs on 240V AC power - classification is 3B - up to 500mW laser power - has adjustable lens for setting focus.

That thing sends the red point quite far - I have not tested further than 500 meters = 1666 feet because of where I live - I would have to go somewhere w open fields plus power outlet to check - but can imagine 2-4 miles would be easy.

The unit is 600x60x60mm (2x0,2x0,2ft) in size and about 4-5 pounds - a real monster - local theatre gave it to me.

Even looking from behind at the red dot about 10-20 meters away longer than few seconds makes the eyes dizzy. 100 meters/yards is ok.

I love lasers. I have a UV laser that can only be seen with night-vision.

At some point I want to get a laser cutter and those can have some monsters in them, too.

I used to work with someone who would do that while fueling a generator, etc.

Squinting his eye due to the smoke curling up from his cigarette, as the ash grew longer, and longer, and . . .

But he never went up in flames.
