Have you thought about replacing it with a new Toyota?

Once you buy one, you'll never stop!

Thanks Mando and Kev. My truck has officially been declared a total loss.

Steve, funny you should mention that, I just drove a Tundra.....3 of them in fact. My reluctance has always been they're not American, but with the car companies taking from the taxpayer cookie jar (except for Ford), I began to consider the possibility. Funny thing was, on our Tahoe, the tag says "Assembled in Mexico", on the Tundra it says, "Assembled in San Antonio, Texas".....go figure. Damned nice truck. Furthermore, the guy that owns the shop where my damaged Dodge is being kept, a guy that is far and away the best mechanic I know, who has also been in the repair business for 30 years, told me today that Toyotas are the best vehicle on the road, regardless of how badly our government tries to smear them. I'm thinking about it.

Kenny, you're a mind reader.

As much as I like dem Fords (and I surely do), there's no union pressure on Toyota. Toyota truck sales are very slow and the San Antonio plant is shut down for a couple of weeks due to the bad press stuff etc., but even when they are not pushing trucks down the line, Toyota keeps them employed at full pay in community service or other worthwhile efforts. Gotta admire that... If they were unionized, there'd be lots of folks out of work...

Still, dang it, my next car/truck will be a Ford... I love their products...

Personally, I'm leery of toyota trucks. It's not that I think their trucks are unsafe, just that I don't think they're as good a workhorse as a chevy or ford (I'm a chevy guy through and through, but ford makes awesome durable work trucks that take abuse and keep on going)

Since this problem with the Toyota "floor mats" came about a while back (there was an article about a prius with an unknown cause of acceleration in a small local paper about 1.5 or 2 years ago) one thing went through my head. It's something in the fuel control system (i.e. computer) and not the tiny floor mats that catch the pedal or the pedal sticking or whatever excuse Mr. Toyoda comes up with.
I'll never buy a car where a computer completely controls the fuel flow (and braking) much less one where you can't disengage the motor from the drivetrain.
I'll take my old cars with electronic fuel injection (electronic throttle body) or carburetor, and brakes with no computer telling the brakes when to brake.
(Can you tell I don't trust a computer to control my car? :p )

I hear ya Kevin, but as much as I hate to admit it, I'm afraid we're rapidly entering the age when computers will contol virtually everything.

Dang, I just saw this thread. I'm glad you're OK West... it's too bad about the truck, but it sounds like it could have been a lot worse.

I hope you didn't burn your particles!

It's called "fly by wire" and your pilot probably had no choice the last time you were in an airplane.

'Ladies and gentlmen, this is your autopilot speaking. I'm actually reminded of an old science fiction story. I want to attribute it to Issac Asimov although I might be wrong. Basically it deals with the military R&D lab of some future society that is looking for the next big breakthrough so they can break out of the stalemate in the current war. (Think of tanks and WWI, if you'd like). The eggheads have just discovered that it is possible to compute a square root without using a computer. They are considering the implications of this and wonder if putting a human being inside their flying fighting machine would provide the flexibility they needed to win the war. In case my retelling was too clumsy, the irony of the story is that they rediscovered the manned aircraft in a world of autonomous, computer controlled, flying machines.

Dear LTGers. I ask you to keep Mr. & Mrs. West in your thoughts. I spoke with Jim about an hour ago and he was off to purchase a zero turning radius rider for his large lawn.

I understand it has a cup holder...
