My wife is an angel. Mrs. West gets up with me at 5:00 am each morning and after breakfast, as I am walking out the door, she hands me my morning, freshly brewed and very HOT coffee. This morning was no different. I'd gotten a good nights sleep as it had rained hard last night.
Styrofoam cup in hand, I was off......middle of nowhere, 5:30 am. As I appraoched the first curve on the farm to market road where we live, I reached for my coffee. I've done that tens of thousands of times, but this time, as I took the cup towards my mouth, it hit the steering wheel. The entire cup of steaming coffee went into my lap.
My butt raised from the seat, and I looked down, again.......as I approached the first curve. The ground was extremely soft as it was so wet, and as I looked up, the driver's side of my truck had left the pavement and I was fast approaching a concrete culvert. Not a problem as I've pointed out to my wife that many times, people overcorrect and it causes them to lose control! I remember having time to think how glad I was that I had my seatbelt on. I pulled to the right and as my driver's side tires grabbed the pavement again, I shot to the other side of the road, this time the entire truck left the pavement.
My truck sideswiped a rather large tree came to rest against an embankment, right next to a piece of 3" pipe marking a pipeline. Didn't look too bad, but she had to be pulled out with a wrecker. My repairman says the frame is bent, but I honestly didn't think I hit that hard. Ol' girl served me well.
I tell you folks this not for sympathy, but to stress how important it is that no matter what happens while you're driving, even a cup of hot coffee in your lap, DO NOT take your eyes off the road.
OK Graham, floor is open to comments on my driving.
