I've been to Red Wing, MN but didn't buy any shoes :-(

I have a pair of black, no-name, tie dress shoes that were new in 1967 or '68. I am amused that they still fit and that one of the kids wore them during the year when he had small feet. Interesting that most "kids these days" don't really own "dress shoes".

You had to bring up Red Wings, and I thought I was the only one with square feet (5E, 7.5). Have a pair of ~25 yo Red Wing Engineers Boots, wore out my first pair tramping the bogs and prairies of Minnesota. Been in Red Wing many times, don't know if the company still manufactures there. Wore the latest pair last ~ 1 year ago in the jungles of Trinidad. The Florsheims and the Red Wings are the most comfortable shoes I own, they are worn in by now :)

Back in the days when I went to an office, after hearing some rave reviews, I ponied up what I thought was way too much for Allen Edmunds. Most comfortable and well made shoes I've owned. Have never used the service, but they have a program where you can send in your worn out shoes and have them rebuilt for about a third of the original price.
Lately I've been wearing a pair of Rockport ankle high lace ups that are as good feeling and wearing as they were 11 years ago when I got them. Rockports for me have been great bang for the buck - especially when they come from the outlet store.

Yeah, Red Wings are still made in Minnesota, mostly.

I looked up Allen Edmunds, same as usual for me, they don't make 'em wide enough, 3E is their max.

Dread', If you need out of the ordinary sizes, try Nick's Boots:

Back in the day, I wore many a pair of Nick's. Fantastic quality. Now I have a lazy man's job and I have no need for a proper man's shoe........

I have narrow feet, B width. Always wear Red Wings for work, and have 2 other pair for knockin' around. Vasque hiking boots, Teva sandals and Nocona cowboy boots. Most shoes don't fit me right, I usually have to try dozens to find a pair that fit. If my feet hurt I get mean.

I have a couple of pairs of Tony Lama Boots, some vintage cowboy boots I got in Austin, I have plenty (way too many) shoes that are 50's/creeper styled from Cox in London, kinda like these :

and then I also have a couple of pairs of Vans sneakers, and black and brown penny loafers as well. And I fully realise I have funny/eclectic taste in shoes.

Before Mrs Keel and I became boat bums I was in the shoe business. Various product development and marketing roles for a bunch of different dress/casual and athletic firms. Some mentioned in this thread.

Very happy NOT to be in that business now :!: :!: :!:

Moving the conversation to the more wide-reaching general footwear category, here's a pair of boots that I don't think Red Wing makes ... although I could be wrong about that.

well, for everyday footwear, I wear either converse hi-tops, adidas basketball shoes (hi-tops), or Durango boots( they are almost as old as I am- and it shows.) For dress shoes for formal events I wear a pair of Dan Post boots- they're incredibly dark red- almost to the point of being black. They're made out of some rare mexican lizard and they look really good.

I always get comments when I wear these on stage. Cool thing is I found them at a yard sale for $5 and they fit perfect.

Since Frono started this thread and it could be legitimately related to his other "What's in a brand?" threads, I'll throw in my 2 cents about Converse, also known as "Chucks" for their classic Chuck Taylor line. I have been a loyal Converse fan for many years, but within the last 10 years they had to declare re-organization bankruptcy, relocate a significant portion if not all their manufacturing to China, and much like my beloved Levi's which lost two belt loops in the name of economy, Chucks sadly just ain't what they used to be. Specifically the soles ain't as thick and well padded as they used to be.
Interestingly durring that period they attempted to capitalize on their cult status with numerous limited editions, one of which was the John Lennon "Peace Chucks", endorsed by Yoko. I actually bought two pair at $50.00/pair, one to wear and one to store until vintage Chucks are again worth 5 times their original purchase price. In truth though a chunk of those proceeds go to legitimate charities. I have no problem with Converse attempting to keep the company afloat with the "special editions".. The last time I visited their website there was some pretty amazing stuff on it, some of it right up there with Carl's red and yellow shoes! !
