Those who know me here have probably read on a post of mine or two that I was really taught to play (fingerstyle) by a good old high school friend of mine back in the early 70's. James, the man who taught me is truly one of the kindest souls I've ever known.
These past few years, James has lost his mother, his brother, and last year he lost his wife. James himself is on the verge of the point of being confined to a wheelchair due to his enormous size and some very bad knees and hips. He lives alone out in the country, can't work because he simply can no longer get out and therefor has no money. He now lives his life through others making phone calls and not only asking what you've been up to, but wanting details so he can visualize other's lives.
In high school, James father gave him a Guild D40, the first Guild I'd ever held in my hands, and long ago, due to financial trouble, James had to sell that D40 and I think it's one of his biggest regrets. Last year, another friend of James' died, and the man's family gave James a guitar which is his only guitar. It's an off brand nylon string classical, not at all suited to his playing ability and of shoddy quality.
Knowing James is confined to his home, has no money, no people around him, and really no guitar, I'm starting a search for something I can buy him. I don't want to spend much as I'm not wealthy either, but thought I might be able to find him something like a D4 in the $200-$300 range in fairly good condition. I'd like to surprise James with this for all he has given me.
If any of you run across a guitar like that, in descent playing shape, in that price range, please send me a PM. I don't like tooting my horn here about the giving thing, but know some of you can help as I've been on the lookout for the past few weeks. A hundred eyes and ears are better than one set. I assure you that if you had a friend like this, and a similar circumstance, you'd do the same.
