Those who know me here have probably read on a post of mine or two that I was really taught to play (fingerstyle) by a good old high school friend of mine back in the early 70's. James, the man who taught me is truly one of the kindest souls I've ever known.

These past few years, James has lost his mother, his brother, and last year he lost his wife. James himself is on the verge of the point of being confined to a wheelchair due to his enormous size and some very bad knees and hips. He lives alone out in the country, can't work because he simply can no longer get out and therefor has no money. He now lives his life through others making phone calls and not only asking what you've been up to, but wanting details so he can visualize other's lives.

In high school, James father gave him a Guild D40, the first Guild I'd ever held in my hands, and long ago, due to financial trouble, James had to sell that D40 and I think it's one of his biggest regrets. Last year, another friend of James' died, and the man's family gave James a guitar which is his only guitar. It's an off brand nylon string classical, not at all suited to his playing ability and of shoddy quality.

Knowing James is confined to his home, has no money, no people around him, and really no guitar, I'm starting a search for something I can buy him. I don't want to spend much as I'm not wealthy either, but thought I might be able to find him something like a D4 in the $200-$300 range in fairly good condition. I'd like to surprise James with this for all he has given me.

If any of you run across a guitar like that, in descent playing shape, in that price range, please send me a PM. I don't like tooting my horn here about the giving thing, but know some of you can help as I've been on the lookout for the past few weeks. A hundred eyes and ears are better than one set. I assure you that if you had a friend like this, and a similar circumstance, you'd do the same.

Thanks Tom. I'm watching a D4 on eBay, but the seller wants to ship in a gig bag. Not so sure about that one.

Yes, I sent him a note and he did say he'd double box. I've just seen so many horror stories of guitars damaged even in a case. There wouldn't be that much at stake though.

West

Have him ship it double boxed (a box inside a box) and then it should be okay.

Were you intending to buy it Wood? With the damage, I'd expect to pay less, but NOT a bad deal really. Thank you sir.

No but if it could be the one for your friend, yes. Worth a look. I will offer like 250 cash. If he replies. Then check it out.

Hey West, Great thing you are doing for a Friend. I know you said your range was $200-$300. I was just browsing reverb and came across this one. It is listed at $400 but has a Make an offer option. D4 in pretty much un played condition with a hard case. Maybe they will take less in an offer. I will keep my eyes peeled for you, especially knowing this is for a good cause. Here is the link to the D4 on Reverb. Good Luck.

No sir, not set on a D4, just thought it might be the most affordable Westerly. James is also a Westerly nut like myself. A tad more than I wanted to pay though at $430 and climbing, but I appreciate it Joe.

Hey Jim, don't know how set you are on a D4 but here's a pretty nice D35 with a case for 355 on eBay.

Joe

*I guess the bidding is in progress, but maybe worth a look.

Thank you Wood, that would be great. He won't care if it's got a crack if it's got a nice sound and is playable. AND, that falls in my price range @ $250.
