Does anybody have a Guild D25M for sale? Looked everywhere and give up on ebay! I live in the UK and would be willing to pay a good price if it was the right one.

Hi
Thanks for the reply. I did see this one but wasn't too sure why it's been re listed. It was sold a few days ago. Also are D25M's pre 1976 regarded as being better quality (in terms of sound) since this was the year they switched to shaded spruce tops instead of solid mahogany tops?

Actually, they switched in '74, then there were some of both varieties produced, but most were spruce tops after that. Me & Graham prefer the spruce tops, but others like the mahogany tops better. I don't think you could go seriously wrong with either one. I think you'll find the spruce tops have more attack, the mahogany tops have a mellower tone. Graham has one of each. And I believe the majority of Mahogany top D-25's have solid flat backs with internal bracing while the spruce top ones have laminated arched backs with no internal bracing. Hope all this is helpful.

At any rate, I might suggest jumping on this one at that BIN price unless you have some reason to believe something fishy is going on with it being re-listed. Ask the seller why?

Welp, I've got a '79 D25M, and honestly can't tell you why a hog topped one might be considered superior. I do know a couple of guys who have the flat back D25's with the hog tops that don't really care for them. I've only played one at a show last year, and it would be impossible to give you an accurate assessment. It had old strings on it and I was in a very loud venue. But for some reason, about a year or so ago, it was like the hog topped flat backs were all of the sudden in great demand, and the prices then reflected that.......the few that you see anymore reflect a drop in value.

Here's a shot of our fellow LTG member "Guildmark" playing mine......and quite well I might add.

Both probably equal in quality, but I'll have to admit, I'm a sucker for the arched backed, spruce topped model. Mine needs more play time.

Well gang :D I just got home with a my 'new' D 25 Corona guitar, made to be played it says! I just stuck a mirror in the hole to see what the top is made of , its mahogany. The guitar is white all over, subdued like a semi gloss cream. but the sound is ALL Guild. It has a flat back, not arched so I guess the whole thing is hog. Action is perfect and at $500....well just couldn't say no. Unfortunately I found a guy who wants to buy my Larrivee 09 cut away with bragg sys. (heartbreak) but fortunately he is willing to pay $2200 for it....Its a gorgeous guitar but spells out the real deals we are getting with our Guilds. Unplugged there just ain't 1700 dollars in sound difference. Not that the Larrivee was overpriced, it could have sold for more.....its the Guilds are underpriced...!!! :!: Got to go now check this baby out! :!: Steffan

Thanks for the reply guys. This is all really useful information which kind of broadens my search a bit. I suppose if you can land on a good D25M regardless of the spruce or mahogany top then all is good really. I currently own a 67' Gibson J45 but always find recording with it a bit heavy on the bass side and slightly light weight on the treble side but after playing a friends 79' D25 I found it to be an extremely well balanced sound and pretty much perfect for recording that dreadnought kinda sound. Even drop tuning stuff with fingerpicking was well rounded as a whole with just the right amount of low end to cut through on the recording without the need to roll off any low eq frequencies later on. The search goes on!

You can't go wrong with either D-25.

I've always preferred the Hog tops to the Spruce tops.
As I've written elsewhere, my old D-25 (1972) eclipses
my Spruce-top D-40 in tone. The D-40 is louder. But it
doesn't sound nearly as sweet. It's harsher, brighter, and
the tight-mid range of Mahogany seems to be diminished
by the brightness of the Spruce top.

Hi people

Just seen this Guild D25M on ebay, I would like a second opinion as to whether I should go for this beast!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0290458032

What do you reckon about the price for a start? Looks in good shape but he doesn't say much about the tone. Everyone on ebay can say a guitar sounds wonderful but sometimes it's nice to hear a bit more of a description on the projection, balance and playability of a guitar. With acoustics it's definitely more of a gamble, don't you think?

Thanks for any help

Hi WGA and welcome to LTG. That isn't the tidiest nut job; sometimes they're hard to get off without damaging the adjacent areas. When they did the first 'wipe', it looks like the glue ran on the headstock but no one bothered to scrape off the remaining excess with a razor blade when it was dry. Sure, you can do it but the question is: 'why didn't they?' not such good work ... garage job? Got any idea why the guitar is listed on eBay UK but is in California?

I don't follow these guitars closely but I think the seller has the BIN-only price including case right about at the asking price; I don't think it's a bargain. Maybe some of the BBers who follow these can tighten up the price estimate. Good luck! CJ
