When I was 18 or so I was working on my car (‘69 Ford Torino) which had been my dad’s before he died. At some point I put down a wrench and it was *gone*. I spent the better prt of an hour looking for it. No wrench.

Two days later I heard a rattle while driving so I pulled over and popped the hood. The rattle was caused by the wrench which was sitting on top of the air cleaner.

There is no way I missed that and to this day I blame the ghost of my dad who was getting back at me for not putting his tools away.

I have this 36mm wrench which I never ever used - then about a month or so ago I was putting a new water pump on my 1998 MB ML320 - that wrench was right size for the fan - but too thick - so I took it to my shop - I think I did - to thin it with an angle grinder.

I've never seen it since - got the pump there and was anxious about having that heavy thing loose somewhere under the hood. Been driving some since. No rattle - it must be somewhere here in the house. 😂

I had partially rebuilt the engine in my 78 Honda Accord, while in HS and had been turing the crank with a large socket wrench through the fender of the car. Honda left a hole there for the socket and extension to reach the big bolt. Once everything looked OK and in time, I got in the car to start it for the first time. I heard this really loud sound and I'm sure my eyes looked as big as dinner plates looking at my dad through the windshield. What the heck was that! I was sure I did something wrong putting it back together. Nope. I left the socket wrench attached to the motor through the fender hole. The direction of the motor was reverse of the tighten direction of the wrench and it was free wheeling at engine speed.

Someday I expect to see a box of Depends with a photo of an old guy in a diaper wearing sunglasses playing an X-79. The tagline, naturally, would be “I Love to Rock and Nothing Slows Me Down!”

And I'm actively searching for the pic where the man thinks : "Angel of Mercy - take me now!" . . .
