Drawer of the month - Volume & Tone knobs
Here's a drawer with old parts that I was really excited about when I discovered them, but it turned out to be slightly different than I initially thought.
They were original old black knobs, with gold and silver discs, but they all had the 'volume' marking on them. What made it really weird is that they were all for pots with knurled shafts, but they also had a 'set screw' in the side, which is something that isn't necessary when you are using a pot with a knurled shaft.
I don't have any idea why this was done, but I've seen them on a few guitars from the '80s.
You may not notice it right away when you have a guitar with those knobs, because you don't really see the set screw when you're not looking for it, but you may notice when you're trying to remove the knob; you simply won't be able to get it off when the set screw is tightened.
So, if you're looking for some '70s G-shield knobs and you can't find original ones, these would work if you can live with the small screw in the side. Remember ......... 'volume' knobs only!
And yes, there are some early transparent G-shield knobs in the drawer, but those all have the 'tone' marking!
Sincerely,
Hans Moust
