I heard on the radio that at times the fire near Lillooet fire was moving at 100 meters a minute,
Thats about 130 yards a minute, or about the same speed of most of us on a good day.

Not that it matters, 100 meters is 109.361 yd
OR 109 yd and 1.08 inches.

Your original request for prayers is bang on. The Pacific NW is parched, measurable precipititation at an all time low, pray for rain.

Hi Pike: one of the problems with the 'information age' - must be true if somebody says so. "
Heh heh, yeah, but I should know better. One of the standing jokes in the sign community is "If the computer can do it, it must be right". That just ain't so either.

No..............don't. This was a thread started to ask for prayer for people potentially in harms way. There are plenty of forums out there for discussing political issues. This isn't one of them! It doesn't take long for this to get old for other members. :?

Score 1 for the good guys! :D

By JEREMY HAINSWORTH (AP) – 2 hours ago

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Firefighters saved a western Canada town from a raging wildfire as they continued Wednesday to battle blazes that have forced more than 5,000 people to flee their homes in the region.

Firefighters stopped a fire only a few hundred yards (meters) from Lillooet, 105 miles (170 kilometers) northeast of Vancouver, by using a controlled burn to contain the flames. About 2,300 people in Lillooet were forced to evacuate from the Mount McLean fire, which has burned 8,150 acres (3,300 hectares) since July 22.

Firefighters were still working to put out some hotspots in the main fire, and two other fronts of the fire continued to burn heavily, said Gary Horley, fire information officer for the British Columbia Forest Service.

No, but those of you whose passwords no longer work will have to successfully pass the online "Remedial LTG" course before being re-admitted

Not on me, friend.....on the fires. and thanks. Seems to be cooling off a bit. Those backfires are a blessing if done right, the impeding fire runs out of fuel, and gets 'contained'. or if the wind shifts it can start a whole new fire, tricky business, gotta hand it to those guys. I've been on a fire line, mop up crew, and the damage is amazing, makes you feel pretty small. I'd like to see some of those hard a++ punks who think they are so tough get put on a fire line, suddenly you aren't so tough, and you have to depend on the guy working beside you, and him you. I remember once taking a step finding myself in a hole about 3 feet deep, with glowing embers all over... you have a guy about 5 feet away on either side, and you are working in a line....immediately these guys were there lifting me out of the hole..you learn a lot about trust ..the ground was so hot, I kept the work boots for a long time...the souls were partly melted.... This was the big fire in southern Oregon, in the mid 80s. National guard was there feeding us......I noticed they always put a little extra on my plate......trying to fatten me up a little, I guess. Great folks. Steffan

Yeah, Steffan. Heroes, they are! What an awesome, all-out effort to save those homes :D

We suffered through a house fire 18 years ago, and while it is just stuff that can be replaced (My Guild was safely in the basement and not where all the water went :D ) it is still very traumatic. I'm happy for my B.C. friends that their homes were spared!

Yessir, firefighting's a noble profession'

Attached article mentions the Kiwis & Oztralians have crews working the BC fires. NZ sent men to California a couple years back when things were looking grimm.

Weather has changed, temporarily anyway, gentle rains on the coast the last few days hydrating this tinder box, actually rained in earnest earlier this evening. I live in a semi rural area & I've counted 3 small roadside brush burns within 3 miles of my house. The local fire departments have been busy & so far quite effective. they pulled out the stops on a dandy brush fire less than a mile from me, put at least 5 crews on a remarkably hot two acre fire. I'm assuming citizens with cell phones are responsible for timely reporting.

Some sobering images here: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/nat ... le1223944/

It ain't raining in the interior, criminy !!! Beautiful country, steep terrain, the Canadian Okanagan, sadly these fires are leaving some massive scars, wildlife decimated, streams will run mud when it rains.
