Cornbread and Milk

Growing up on a farm in rural Tennessee, we milked our 4 Jersey cows by hand, churned our own butter, and made our own buttermilk.
One of many things I miss is Cornbread and buttermilk - fill a glass about half full of cold buttermilk and crumble up cornbread in it. Would eat it with a spoon until nearly finished think drink the last "swaller" - soaked crumbs and all. Admittedly, I am the crusty edges, of the cornbread, lover. Sweet (whole) milk wasn't bad but if we had buttermilk in the Frigidaire, (all refrigerators were called Frigidaires no matter what their brand name), I chose buttermilk.
Why don't I eat it now? Because I don't do physical work like I did in the 50s and 60s.
Just wondered if other members experienced such?

My father-in-law was from Arkansas and would do that (with whole milk)!

Well, I don't dunk ;) , but cornbread and buttermilk was a favorite of my grandmother. I know my mom likes cornbread and ... something. Maybe whole milk, can't remember.

Anyway, it all sounds very familiar to me.

I just like cornbread, once I finally learned how to make it without it being dry!

Had a roommate many years ago that always helped himself to my milk and I suspected he was drinking it at the fridge right from the container, so I bought some buttermilk and filled my empty milk container with it...and waited. Sure enough, the bastard took a big gulp of it and spit it out all over the fridge. Busted!! That was the last time I was ever short on milk!

I grew up on buttermilk in Germany. No cornbread to be found anywhere in the whole country though. I've since lost my taste for buttermilk. Or, the buttermilk we got in Germany back then was local non pasteurized stuff you didn't keep in the fridge. A household fridge there was like the size if a dorm fridge. Milk was delivered to your door every couple days. The grocery store buttermilk in the US just isn't the same to me. Tastes more like whole milk gone bad.

Just write your initials on the jar lid and tie a seagrass string to it and a tree limb. No one ever stole any milk that I remember.
And I went to a little 2 room school at the location of the spring (where school got their water for students to drink and the one cook to use). O, yeh, the name of the School was Spring Hill.

1956 Spring Hill basketball team played in March of Dimes tournament. Yours truly lower left - all names mixed up.
Lots of muscle on those Spring water drinkers!! Enough about Spring Hill

We had a spring way back in the woods in a gorge on the outskirts of Bowie Md where teenagers of the 70's/80's would have bonfire keg parties on weekends. The (often multiple) kegs were always there in advance, roped to a tree and submerged in the cold spring head. I wouldn't doubt if Eva Cassidy had been there numerous times.

My wife's family did the cornbread in milk thing. I don't recall it being buttermilk. The big thing was that cornbread in the mountains of Kentucky was made with white cornmeal and you made it in a skillet and called it a "pone". It was not like the stuff we used to get a Marie Calendar's restaurants. Mrs W calls that "Corn cake". I prefer the cake version with yellow corn meal, but what to I know about southern cooking?

I wrote a long post and deleted it. Cornbread brings back childhood memories of food insecurity and cornbread was what we ate when we were out of money. I hated that stuff so much that I took as little as possible, and went to bed hungry.

Cornbread and green beans are the dinner they serve in Hell.

Wow.. growing up in So california it was different Met Don when I was 25 and he was from West Virginia. He always wanted cornsbread and stuff and I was sorta likely to go along. But tastes changed over the years and then in the late 80's we went back to W. Virginia to see his aunt and also his mom. It was fun, and she was lovely and then she warned Don, "Don't take that sweet young 'un over across the road (his sister lived right across the holler and he couldn't go see her and she couldn't see us) because of trouble!!" His sister's husband was a huge HELL FIRE preacher there and just us visiting was trouble!! So we stayed put and then left the next day. But the morning we left his mom made Squirrel and Gravy over her amazing Biscuits.... OMG!!

Then we left. He never saw his sister across the way, and I'm sure the next sermon at the church was about evil demons who come among us!!

Y'all know I'm a demon.... right?? :ROFLMAO::D:eek:

I've eaten squirrel. And bluegills and rabbit, venison and bear.
Eff that, Tom! If we ever meet, it's steaks for all three of us, asparagus with garlic and parmesan, and Mac with smoked Gouda and greyere.

Also, this wine my patron gave me is 22 proof...

Never had it. Not interested in it. Reminds me of dunking. Sounds similar to a particularly unpleasant bowl of cereal. My response is almost entirely predictable given which part of the country i spent my formative years in :)

My mother was from Alabama so I grew up with buttermilk and cornbread but we never dunked. And it was proper salty white cornbread from either a cast iron skillet or muffin pan. The Marie Calendar type cornbread is so sweet and odious I'm surprised it doesn't come with frosting. Ever since Vicki and I got married in '71 we've only used skim milk for cereal but she used buttermilk in a lot of the things she baked. We both like sour and tangy things and on a hot day buttermilk over ice is great. I have one vegetarian friend who lived on butter and cheese (not so much now because of his cholesterol levels) who one day saw our buttermilk and wanted to try some. I guess he imagined it would be like sweet cream or something and then came the spit take after the first sip. "How can you drink this stuff?! It's SOUR!". Oh, and my cornbread has always been our basenjis absolutely favorite treat!

We only eat cornbread with soups, chili, stews and a whole host of other meals. My favorite is baked with corn kernels, onions, cheddar and jalapeno. Some meals just aren't right without cornbread.:) Had some last night.......Happy New Year Shelby.

I'm no expert on devils and such Tom but if you are one you are one who is well respected and loved on this forum.

I think, based on some of the descriptions here, that I've never had real cornbread like you are talking about. Having said that, I do like whatever it is that I've eaten, but tend to stay away from it because of my diabetes.
