...I actually gently sanded the holes in the bridge on the GF 60. I repeat "Gently". Didn't seem to remove much material, more like removing finish & gunk from inside the holes. , I used the old pins as a sort of mandrell, cut little bits of sandpaper to fit the contour of the pins & gently, very gently, trued the inside diameter of the bridgepin holes to fit the pins...I'd wrap the sandpaper tight around the pin....
Slick, mighty slick!

Great job Jeff. I didn't mean to sound like I thought you were nuts, just making sure I understand. Sometimes I'm a little slow.

Effin, Black inlay on the 72 ha, I'd never have thought of that. Post a picture if you get time.

Thanks guys,
West

I followed Jeff's recommendations to fit the bone pins in my D-25 and found it to be excellent advice. So if I didn't mention it earlier, thanks for the tips, Jeff.

And the black matches the ebony on the pickguard, I like it! Nice job Effin. Thanks for the picture.

Coincidently, I posted new pics of my dread today, including tortoise inlay pins by Gordon Orth in my D-25 and D-35.

I would like some new pins for my DCE5 as well, especially since the ones in it aren't original, but don't know what size i need. What is a good way to find out what size they are so i can have someone make me some? I know i could send him one of my pins but then i don't have an acoustic guitar to play(no Guilds anyway). I have also heard of using a micrometer to give them measurements, but i don't know if i trust myself to do this. Any suggestions?

Those are some sharp looking pins by the way!

Dreamlander...
The safest thing to do is send Gordon your old pins and let him match them. I have ordered from Gordon 3 times... the first two orders (4 sets of bridge pins and some end pins/strap buttons), I sent the pins to him, since the sizes differed from set to set. All were pretty standard fare for him (bone with ab or tortoise inlay), and it was only ~a week from the time I sent my pins express mail until I got the new ones back. I stuck some temporary pins in my guitars (I had some Tusq pins I no longer use) while I awaited the new pins.

The last order took a little longer, since I wanted black horn with gold pearl dots. Gordon had to order the dots from StewMac...so it took a little more than 2 weeks. However, in this case I measured the pins, and they were pretty standard sized (0.215 x 5 degree taper)... so I saved the $4.05 postage it would have cost to send them.

You might go to your local shop and get a cheap set of plastic pins to put in so you can play while you send the originals out to be copied (doesn't matter if the temps are a little loose, as long as they stay in). I highly recommend Gordon's work... and he and Betty have been a pleasure to deal with. I think his contact info is posted earlier in this thread.

Not a particularly daunting task D/L.

Well if Gordon can get them done that quick I think i can handle sending him my pins since i am gone from home for a week at a time anyway. Is it necassary to send him the whole set, just one pin would work not?

What were the original ones-white or cream plastic?

sausgirl,
Assuming you are referring to FNG's 72; The very early ones used plastic pins with abalone dots (cherry picked to use the bluest abalone). Not long after that Guild started to use the turquoise dot pins.

Mine didn't come with original pins, came with some cheesy ebony pins with tuquoise inlay. The bone pins with black dot are a perfect match. Can't find anyone who does aftermarket pins with turquoise.

I usually sent at least 3 pins of each set... just because plastic pins get pretty beat up over the years, and hard to measure. It doesn't cost anymore to send 3 vs. all...

I just had a great conversation with Gordon Orth about some pins. What a guy. He gave me his number in an email this morning and asked if I would call him this evening but it was busy for a bit. When I did get through he apologized for talking on the phone so much but he was just buying a '39 Martin D-18 and was getting more info on it. About $35K. Says he has about 14 or so of those vintage Martins kicking around.

Anyway he knew who Dave Gard was right away. So he knows what I'm after in tortoise eyes on the head, but I will be sending him a couple of the pins for correct measurement and he says it will only take about a week. Says that they made over 21,000 pins last year and are on track to repeat that this year.

Also says they were at the Arlington show, had a booth which I missed, and they took part in the jam in the Wyndham Bar Saturday evening. Also had breakfast Saturday and Sunday in the Wyndham.

We probably passed this guy several times in the hotel. Oh well, he'll be at Arlington '08 so I'll be sure to stop in and see him and probably buy more pins, so if anyone else is thinking about it, bring a few pins with you.
