Bone Pins Question

Will the plain white bone bridge pins as found on the new Guild D-50 and D-40 fit a Martin D-28? I think they are both 5 degree taper slotted pins. But I don't know much about pins. Some are slotted to the collar, some are slotted thru the collar. And Maury's, a good source for such things, has a strange code that represents various sizes that I can't unravel.

Thanks

I can't answer your question (don't know what the new Guilds and Martins use for pins), but here's an explanation of some pin sizes:

http://www.ivorybuyer.com/sales/gpin_sizing.php

My older Guilds have had either 2B ('74 G-37, '74 D-25, '78 D-35) or 4.2D ('72 D-35 and '92 D-55). Of course, I don't know that the pins that came in any of the guitars EXCEPT the '72 D-35 (which I bought new) were originals.

Gordon Orth, who makes the ivory pins for Warther will make a set of custom bone pins for you, matching a set you send him. You can specify dot inlay material (abalone, MOP, faux tortoise, ebony? other?) and size (up to 4 mm). Doesn't cost much more than buying "stock" bone pins from elsewhere ($35 for a set of six bone pins with 4 mm abalone inlay).

Use Maury's code. They actually know what there talking about. It's really not Maury's code I think this is some industry standard.

The Martin pin size is slightly bigger and can be easily sanded down to fit guild.
Both Guild and Martin have 5 degree taper pins but that may not be on true for all years.
If you are in doubt just call them. I'm sure they can help.

Guild guitars Size 4.2D
* 5º tapered shaft
* shaft diameter at the top of the shaft is 0.207" and tapers down to 0.144" with a long (0.945") shaft
* the slot runs the full length of the shaft, stopping below the ball
* these pins do not have a skirt - just a slight ridge beneath the ball
* the slot does penetrate this ridge.

Size 1
* 3º tapered shaft
* 0.210" diameter at the top of the shaft (just below the skirt)
* string slot running the full length of the shaft, stopping below the skirt.

# Fits the following guitars: Martin guitars prior to 1994 (except HD-28)
# Blueridge guitars
# Collings guitars prior to 2002
# Blanchard
# Garrison
# Goodall
# Ryan
# Santa Cruz
# Taylor guitars.
Size 2A
* 5º tapered shaft
* 0.220" diameter at the top of the shaft (just below the skirt)
* string slot running the full length of the shaft and cutting through the skirt

# Fits the following guitars: Martin guitars since 1994
# Gibson guitars

Martin :lol:

I recently purchased some bone pins from Maurys music for a F47 RCE. the pin size was 4.2d which their website said was for Guild's. they were a perfect fit.

I just ordered exactly the same thing from Maury's a week ago for my D-55! My local luthier is doing some touch ups on both my Guilds so I had Maury dropship to his shop. I spoke to the luthier by phone yesterday (I'm on vacation this week) and he said they fit fine and look great. I got the bone with abalone inlays. I waited to see how well these worked before ordering 12 of them for the G-312. That'll be the next step when I get home. Joy! :D

I'm pretty sure not all Guild's have the same size bridge pins. The original pins from my GF 60 are way too small for my F 20, they fall right out, as do a set of Tusq pins I ordered from Don.

Here's a set of Bone pins with 4 mm tortoise dots Gordon Orth made for my GF 60. Gordon is a terrific guy, we swapped emails & digital photos till he was satisfied he knew what size was required. The pins arrived and as he predicted they were a bit oversize.

A few minutes, gently, with some 320 grit sandpaper & they dropped in perfectly

I don't know what the pins in my D35 are made of - I'd guess bone, but none of them are straight, they all curve a bit away from the groove at the end - look like a pulled tooth root when out. Means the string end never gets under the pin end though.

I've told you this before Jeff, but I can't get over how great those pins look in that guitar.

Gordon does beautiful work... He made me two sets of bone pins w 4mm abalone dots for my D-55 and G-37, with matching strap button and end pin for the G-37. I still haven't had the wherewithall to drill a hole in the neck of the G-37 for the strap button. The abalone he used was some of the most colorful I have ever seen. Jeff's tortoise dots look so nice, I have been planning to order a set for my D-25M... just trying to find time to give Gordon a call.

West,

Thanks for the compliment, I've been stalling on ordering pins for the rest of the bevy.

Lemme see, what is it 5 or 6 Guilds at $35.00 each = $.$$ too much.

The pins in the F 20 are plastic & have been around the bend several times, can't decide what to do.

I replaced the pins in the DV 62 with Tusq. A couple days ago I changed the strings on the F 20 & was playin Barbies with my gits. Put the original DV 62 pins in the F 20. The don't fit quite right either & same old plastic anyhow, just have a little black dot where th original F 20 pins were plain.

New pins look nice, but if you want to improve the sound of your guitar, start with a new saddle.

:lol: You should see the old plastic pins that are still on my D25. I keep threatening to get bone saddle and pins for the old girl, but something keeps getting in the way. Do you think I'd hear some improvement? :wink:

The pins in my D55 don't fit well, and I've been considering some of the dark brown colored walrus tusk for her, along with a walrus tusk saddle. Either walrus tusk or petrified porcupine pecker. Any thoughts? I am serious about the walrus tusk though. I think that brown color might look nice on a burst. The D55's got plastic on her too, at least I think it is.

Give her the old hot needle test. Plastic melts & bone doesn't. Heat up a needle with a match & stick it in, it'll melt & give right away.

Might want to pick an inconspicuous spot to do the test.
