So the next you pick up the ax realize that your are communicating with the Eternal....but then again you know this don't you.

I like that. I'll have to keep it in mind while playing.
It applies to everything we do.

Welcome aboard Capquest,

Lately I have not been very active in any thing but work.
Good luck with that retirement thing.

I'm a skeptic in such matters, but part of me completely comprehends this. In any case, Cap, enjoyed the Masonic insight. Very cool.

Here's an explanation of how this relates.

There are seven ancient liberal arts. Grammar, Logic, Rhetoric, Arithmetic, Geometry, MUSIC and Astronomy.
The first three are called the Trivium (from which the word trivial comes) and are of the internal sciences of Man.

Grammar is the naming of things using words and is the first directive given to Man by The Great Architect in most of the Sacred Books of Law (God has many names and Man has received many books of Law. Bible, Koran, etc)

Logic is the formation of thoughts into concepts,

Rhetoric is the ability to communicate those thought into convincing arguments to others. There is a form of Logic called Sophistry which is the use of false logic to prove a false point (Politicians are especially adept at this)

The other four are called the Quadvium and are the arts and sciences that address the Universe outside of Man.

Arithmetic is the study of numbers and their relationships

Geometry (Physics) is the noble Art of the study of reality in dimensions. Two dimensions is called a superficies (from which the superficial derives)

MUSIC is the science of sound and contemplation....the study of the Muse. Brother Mozart said music was Geometry in sound. Consider the relationship af the frequencies in a major or minor scale or the cycle of fifths. Brother Issac Newton confirmed these divine relationship in his work with Light.

Astronomy is the study of the Great Architect's monumental work. Consider this, when you look at a star are you lookin far away or back in time?

So the next you pick up the ax realize that your are communicating with the Eternal....but then again you know this don't you.

I know this has been a long paper but you asked what it has to do with Guild guitars and that it.

BTW. The Shriners raised 600 million dollars last year for the Shrine hospitals. There are no cash registers in those hospitals. You have bank presidents, US Presidents, Prime Ministers, famous musicians etc. all getting dressed up in funny hats driving around in little cars or being clowns for those kids.

Charity is one of the Great guiding Lights in Masonry.

If this has been too esoteric I apologize

Cap.

Actually, it's worth repeating.

Thanks for sharing, Capquest. :D

I like the IDEA of being a Freemason, but the modern Freemasons seem like a more secretive rotary club to me. Definitely not the Freemasonry of old! Plus, they don't allow Atheists to join (although I suppose I could lie. . .or find a creative way to interpret "belief in a supreme being").

The secret society thing has always fascinated me to a point, but with all of my other activities, who has the time? I suppose the Elks club is another alternative. I've got no problems with showing up to meetings, wearing a funny hat, etc. . .just no time for the community service and all that.

mingus2112,

Without getting in an area I won't discuss let me tell you that Masonry is an internal journey. Yes, you are right that in the last 50 yrs the Craft has become more of a service club that an esoteric body. This is slowly changing back to the earlier discipline.

Suffice it to say that the tools of the Craft are there to be picked up and used. Many of our brethren simply come to the meeting and enjoy the fellowship. However, the founders of speculative Masonry were very esoteric people and it used to be a very exclusive fraternity of thought.

Newton, Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin, Hancock, Paul Revere, and more were people of great intellectual capacity. Either way the experience is illuminating to one degree or other.

You may be just enjoying an evening of fellowship with good and virtuous men or you are there to discover the great truths as have been passed down through antiquity. There have always been schools of enlightment but it's OK to sit and enjoy the meeting.

We have ways of identifying each other so as to know that I'm communicating with another Mason. These grips and words are easily obtained on the 'net. However, it doesn't make you a Mason and I would know immediately that you were not.

Being an Atheist is another issue. Do you believe that the world ends when you die? Or that that guitar you play and feel such emotion for is simply conditioned response? If you see nothing greater than yourself and some random phenomenon then you cannot be a Mason.

Hope this was informative.
