Beautiful guitar.

What is the backdrop there? The stone wall is particularly intriguing.

That's my neighbor's house; he has much better available light indoors than I have. The house is built onto the top of a limestone cliff, and they incorporated much of the stone into the first floor of the house.

Nice guitar Day. Who's the old geezer ?

The old geezer would be me.

"Dayuhan" means "foreigner" in Tagalog, my second language; I've lived in the Philippines on and off (mostly on) since doing a Peace Corps term '79-'81. Been living in Sagada, a little town way up in the mountains, lovely scenery, forest and rock and rivers. Cool people, an indigenous tribe that got educated and run their own show pretty much as they please. The place has been a regular fixture on the Eurohippe tourist trail forever, and we get a lot of artists, musicians, etc coming through and sometimes staying a while. Peace and quiet, simple life, not so bad. We spend more time on mt bikes and in kayaks than in cars. "We" being me and 2 kids, 17 and 12, single parent for 10 yrs.

And now you know way too much about me and not nearly enough about the guitar...

I'm also still grieving my stolen Epiphone, a 12 string that was stolen from my barracks back in '73 when I was in the Navy. Swine is too nice a term for guitar thieves

Let's jsut say if I used the right terms to describe guitar thieves I'd be guilty of major violations of the terms of use, and the message board software would reject most of what I had to say as unsuitable for public consumption!

I knew your name sounded familiar - I spent about a year in the Philippines when I was in the Navy (most of 1974) but I don't remember much Tagolog  I sure remember swigging a lot of cold San Miguels, though

Ferdinand and Imelda were still in charge when I was there. Martial law was in effect, everybody had to be off the streets at midnight, or else

My favorite place was Baguio City, up in the mountains.

I lived 5 years in Subic, after the Navy left, know that place pretty well. Remember Ferdinand and Imelda too... interesting times. Still are, but they always are here. They used to play some damned good rock & roll down Magsaysay Ave, if I remember right.

Now if you went to Baguio, and kept right on going north for about 5.5 hours on a twisting windy dirt road, ideally using the beat up '94 Toyota 4x4 pickup in my driveway... you'd get to where I'm at right now.

It's like... well, it looks like this:

That little spot is me doing the other thing I do, mt bikes. Well, and kayaks. And a bunch of other stuff.

Ya do any James Taylor, Tag?

Not lately, but i used to. Something worth doing again. Though if I could play like anybody I want... I'd play like Roy Bookbinder. Or JJ Cale.

Actually... about 6 months ago the bridge on my last guitar snapped right clean off. Got an electric in the house, an old Charvel wired through a Marshall 40V (and that's a fun toy too) but things been a little nuts and between one thing and another I haven't played a whole hell of a lot in the last year. So now I'm just gettin' it back, going over stuff I once knew, mostly messing with really simple songs but trying to make em right, lettin' that big guitar just sing, easy stuff but make every note right... I get the feeling y'all know what I mean. The nice thing is, it's coming back fast, and once in a while I'll lay into something a little more complicated, and it's going pretty good.

So in honor of this post I'll sit my a$$ back and play "Wandering". which has a past or 2 or 10 for me.

Are the window-sills stone or wood ? (Inside joke)

I get the feeling there's one or two inside jokes here that I've yet to catch up with. That may change.

But...

Ok, y'all gotta cut me a wee bit of slack here, being new and all. The clock on this computer says 1:12 AM in my time zone. The bottle of Laphroaig sitting beside the computer says "empty" (but there's another one downstairs). Me, I just got myself finally and beyond doubt dumped by the perfect woman. I don't blame her one bit, not at all. She's 29 and what she is, I'm 49 with 2 kids and a psycho ex. We had 3.5 years and we messed each other up plenty, and when it was right there was nothing better. She was there and stayed there when the times got hard and the $#!T hit the fan, and what else can you ask...

So... if you're in the mood, pour a glass and raise it this way and pronounce a toast: to you, there's nobody on this planet quite like you and never will be, and wherever you walk you carry whatever blessings one man can give.

Now excuse me, I'm gonna set this lovely smooth set of curves that walked into my life at just the right time on my lap, and play some Tom Waits, because that's what's there.

Why do I get the feeling most everyone here has walked down this road before?

See y'all round...

Hardly a joke Day.

I happen to admire architectural subtleties, like deep window sills, stone walls, and the like. Some of the folks here take one thing about you and run around for weeks with it.

I mean really.

They're gonna have a good time with me.

You'd like the house in that picture, it's one huge mass of architectural subtlety. Really really nice wood work, and of course there's the stone. Pretty unique; they spare no expense in the doing. Me, I got an old wooden house from the late '40's, not one right angle in the place but warm and solid and with plenty of character... it ain't half bad...

...Most of us have been down that road before and it sure has a lot of bumps. We have to learn to be thankful for the time we spend with those we care deeply about and how to let them go so that we can both move on
and grow into the next chapter of this crap shoot called life. Not usually an easy thing to do.I raise my glass "CLINK" to you and yours!

Dayuhan, I gotta say you are surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Inspiring indeed. Thanks for the short story on how you got there too. Enjoy your beautiful new Guild. Something tells me it must sound especially majestic in those parts.

Magsaysay Ave? Rock'n'roll blasting out of every bar! We used to jokingly refer to "Smoke On The Water" as "the Filipino National Anthem" because it got played so much  Every bar had their own recipe for "Mojo", and we used to get ice cold San Miguels at the corner sari-sari store for 70 centavos each.

Great photo up in the mountains there. We took a Victory Liner (bus) up to Baguio, thought I was gonna die several times on those narrow twisty roads...

I still make lumpia for dinner now and then, still one of my favorite foods, I have to roll up about 100 of them to make it worth my while - 50 to deep fry, 50 more in the freezer for next time :D

Used to go to White's Beach a lot, too. There was a little pub on the way there called the "Cork Room", really laid back, lots of dart boards and usually a solo acoustic guitarist performing. Someone such as yourself with such a fine Guild could command a few pesos, eh?
