I picked up my new (used) F50R last week, after a long journey... from Spruce Tree Music in Madison (good people) to a friend in Virginia, who brought it halfway around the world to Subic Bay in the Philippines, where I picked it up and drove 12 hrs north to my rustic mountain retreat.
This is the 3rd acoustic I've ever owned. Bought the first in 1980 in Montreal, a stunning Epiphone PR765 that was a dream to play and hold. Never thought I'd need another steel string, but that was stolen in '95, I curse the swine to this day, and I wonder who ended up with that guitar. Didn't have the money then for a proper guitar, so I bought a half decent cheapie and made do... never stopped thinkin' someday there'd be a time.
The time did come. Spent a lot of time with this guitar over the last week, on the back porch and in front of the fireplace. There's nothing "special" about this guitar to most people - it's not vintage, no rock star signature, nothing other than a quite typical Tacoma-built F50R.
It's special to me though, because it's mine. It's in impeccable condition, and the craftsmanship is pretty much flawless. Love that big wide spruce top, love that warm rosewood tone, don't give a rat's a$$ that it's not Brazilian. It's not as red or as figured as the wood on the Epiphone was, but it's beautiful in its own way, clean straight grain and perfect finish The body sits perfectly in my lap; it's a big physical guitar and that's what I wanted, I'm a big physical guy. The neck felt right in my hand from the first touch... that was Deep River Blues, in as close to the Doc Watson mode as my hands can get, and when I laid a pick on it the whole room seemed to come alive... big without boomy, just clean and resonant, whether I'm barely touching it late in the evening by a smoldering fire with a bottle of Laphroiag close by or going loud in the daytime when the house is empty.
Anyway, you get the picture. Really nice instrument, and I'm happy, hope to keep this one for the duration. I'll put some pictures up by and by, when I take some that do it justice, haven't really tried yet.
Hope y'all enjoy yours as much as I'm enjoying mine...
