We still mulling it over. We do prefer cooler weather.
I seem to be the opposite of most folks because as I get older, cold weather bothers me less, and hot weather bothers me more. I would absolutely die during the warm weather months in most of the southern states. Heck, it's bad enough here on Long Island most summers!

My wife & I have traveled all over Florida while bird-watching. The Keys are just spectacular, and we’ve enjoyed a number of spots on both the Gulf & Atlantic coastlines. But unfortunately, the state is way down on my list in terms of overall livability. Too many people in general, too many seriously whacked out people, too oppressively hot & humid, too many biting & bloodsucking insects, too many crawling critters, and too many natural disasters. Woody, have you got some kind of a death-wish thing going on?

I think you're originally from New England, so you know what it is like around here. Maybe give it a thought if you're back for family reasons in the near future.

I also couldn't live in FL due to the temps/humidity, and all the other items mentioned above.

Oh, and they have rattlesnakes in the panhandle, too.

With the exception of 2 years in Alaska and 5 in Washington / Oregon, I have been in New England for 72 years. Born is Boston and grew up there and in the suburbs. It took moving out west for 7 years to realize, I did not want any part of Massachusetts. In 1983 we bought a KOA Kampground and followed our dream to the mountains of New Hampshire, where we've been for 38 years. Great place to live and raise 3 kids.

Doing things winter related, don't appeal to me. Skiing, snowmobiling, shoveling, slipping and sliding.........no thanks. Finally, about 9 years ago, I drew the line in the sand. I told the Mrs., I'm not staying up here in the winter anymore, end of discussion. She had a little part time job, that she liked, I get it. The little job gave us some separation time and she is 5 years younger. She knew I was right and soon we were on the same page.

So, now we go to Saint Simons Island GA for three months in the winter; no snow, no ice, no snow tires, no cold. But I trade it in for warm weather, not hot, warm, no crowds. We're half way between Jaxsonville and Savannah, so there's plenty to do. After 3 months, I'm ready to head north and get back into my element.

You can't beat New Hampshire for 9 months. Piece it together with 3 months down south it's a perfect match. Like Sandy said, I dont like it hot either, nor do I like the cold. I don't like hurricanes, tornadoes and 85 plus or 20 and below weather. Throw in crowds and traffic. Florida is not for me; but each to his own. And at 72, not interested in picking up and starting new.

Tom, Sounds like you have the right idea. As I’ve been thinking about it there is no perfect place year round for me, so I’d love to be able to do the same as you one day. When I was younger and skiing, snowmobiling, winter camping, etc. it was fine. But these days winters just plain suck for these old bones.

Glad your wife liked looking over where I live, Woody. Nevertheless, I'm not recommending to anyone anymore, as it's become one of the places people run to for land grabs whenever there's a big scare. You guys are the last ones we're letting in, so close the gate behind you.

Jeter's getting inducted to the HoF Sept 8. They're thinking 35,000 idiots packed into a big open field. We'll see if the virus protocol holds up 'til then. I have my doubts.

I live in Sanford, North of Orlando. A nice little historic village on a lake -- Lake Monroe, technically part of the Saint Johns River. We love it here because it has the small-town feel, surrounded to the West, North, and East by lots of hiking, biking, kayaking, etc. Orlando is to the South but I only venture there for work. As far as ocean access goes, New Smyrna Beach, Daytona, and Titusville are all about 45mins away via car. Prices have gone up everywhere but I would still consider the Sanford area to be relatively affordable.
Also, if you look a little West of here, toward Mount Dora and Eustis, you get a little bit hilly (believe it or not) and plenty of beautiful nature out that way too.
Lots of people just think of beaches, resorts, outlet/strip malls, and so on when they think of Florida, but there's so much beautiful historic and natural stuff to explore. I'm a fan. Just be careful on the highways and avoid the amusement parks! :)

we have MI on our short list, Mark.
I think we were looking at a small farm in a rural area way outside of Grand Rapids. I forget the name...

Maybe you can live in Michigan and go to Florida in the winter like a couple million other people from here.

It's not easy to piece things together and make things work. As you know, everyone has there own variables to mesh. You have to keep tinkering to get the right combination. It took us some time to get to his point. Now we close the house, pack the clothes, the dog, the Mrs. water colors, my guitar and my tools and we're ready to go. Well that is a simplified version.

Finland welcomes you - clean and peaceful - easy to find quiet - anywhere - anytime.

Plus - most of us can communicate in english . . .

And finally - maybe most importantly - our unofficial "National Dog" is Labrador Retriever 🐾

Our Jymy says : Welcome 😍
