Good Ol' Cactus Ed. In the mid '60s I moved to MN for grad school and as a consequence fell in love with the prairie and open country in general, harder for your enemies to sneak up on you  It wasn't until 1988 that I made it to the desert around Las Cruces NM where a friend hosted a scientific meeting. I stayed at his house, and noticed several books by someone named Edward Abbey. I asked about them and he was shocked that i did not know who he was. He said he was to the desert what Sigurd Olson, nature writer and conservationist, was to the northern forest in the Arrowhead Country in MN. When I got home I bought Desert Solitaire, it is one of my favorite books. There are few I reread, I reread Desert Solitaire every so often.
AND there is a Guild connection  , Abbey wrote Desert Solitaire in Hoboken NJ.
