i'd break out the heavy artillery for an Oprah book or anything having to do with Oprah, something like a grenade launcher...or why not a Gatling gun. That should be enough to take out my aggression and disdain for Oprah.
C'mon, how do you really feel? You're among friends here.

I'll not comment except to say thank you to the moderators, and I mean that. Personal opinions and not a "lock" or a "deletion". I honestly do believe that things will not get much better in this country until both sides can talk without fear of being rediculed or censored and without getting too upset. I love it, and the entire country would be much better for free and open discussion.

West, just a little reminder : the internet is not a country, nor is it exclusive to the USA. Play nice now, boys.

Always enjoy rehashing old Edward Abbey titles and sitting on the nightstand now is The Fool's Progress, referred to by the author as "an honest novel."

It's a good read by one of the true eco-heroes of our time.

Good to know there are still a few of Ed's fans out there.
Hayduke Lives! :D

With some of the books I like I wonder if I wasn't born in the wrong decade.

Didn't care as much for The Monkey Wrench Gang, but it was still good.

His collections of essays, Down the River, Beyond the Wall, One Life at a Time, Please, etc., are great reading.
Lest we forget to mention Desert Solitaire. That was a seminal volume for me when I moved westward. 8)

Good Ol' Cactus Ed. In the mid '60s I moved to MN for grad school and as a consequence fell in love with the prairie and open country in general, harder for your enemies to sneak up on you  It wasn't until 1988 that I made it to the desert around Las Cruces NM where a friend hosted a scientific meeting. I stayed at his house, and noticed several books by someone named Edward Abbey. I asked about them and he was shocked that i did not know who he was. He said he was to the desert what Sigurd Olson, nature writer and conservationist, was to the northern forest in the Arrowhead Country in MN. When I got home I bought Desert Solitaire, it is one of my favorite books. There are few I reread, I reread Desert Solitaire every so often.
AND there is a Guild connection  , Abbey wrote Desert Solitaire in Hoboken NJ.

Harmony H-173 bought in 1960 (retired), Alvarez AC60S 2008, Eastman AC320ce 2008 "Hybrid", Guild GAD-JF30E(blonde) 2008, Guild JF55 1997, Guild D25M 1974, Martin Grand J35E 2009, Martin D12-20 1970

We are connected....often by the books we read and those we gravitate toward throughout our lives!
I've been editor of the local Audubon newsletter for 15 years and Ed is always my "go-to guy" for quotable quotes.

Cheers,
Joe

I'm sure there's enough good stuff left for another 15 years.

I always pick up Abbey books at thrift stores and yard sales. When guests ask me for a book recommendation, I give them one and tell them to read 5 or 10 pages, and if they like it take it home with them. I give them out as fast as I buy them, and the recipients usually pass them on to someone else. A cheap way to save trees and buy friends.
