They were just Guardsmen ... week-end warriors ... not riot police; they're supposed to sandbag levees, do emergency storm cleanup, go to summer camp and wash their trucks for two weeks .... nobody is supposed to be sent anywhere with loaded guns, no clear orders, and ineffective leadership. They're not supposed to be substitutes for civil authority; the University, local, county, and State police. The police are trained in the use of deadly force v. civilians; not the National Guard. Except for more deaths and injuries, I don't see how it could have been worse.

Ineffective leadership was no doubt the problem. And you are correct, according to U.S. Code this was an inappropriate use of the military.

... Here is a link to some new information that has come to light about that question: http://www.cleveland.com/science/index.ssf/2010/10/analysis_of_kent_state_audio_t.html
Thank you.

I guess if I had been armed, mingling in a riotous crowd that I was photographing for the sake of future arrests, been confronted about it: 'Hey buttwipe, what are you doing there?', let go some rounds that caused the Guardsmen to believe they were being fired on, I guess I wouldn't be talking about it either.

But, since this is America, maybe he'll loosen up with a book deal, movie rights, residuals, some YouTube vids, and a computer game based on the day's events.

Hmm... should the emoticon in my response be :D or :( or maybe just

Speaking of such things, and a complete veer... no, I'll start a different off-topic thread.

Mr. .38 has probably already looked into after-the-fact buck-making ... after all, this is America ... and probably found that he'd be subject to the 'Son of Sam' laws. I don't think we have an emoticon for sardonic irony.
