Its hard to put into words, just so sad to loose such a huge hearted man. Everytime I look at my beat up '65 D40 with its dual pick guards and deep pick gouges above and below the sound hole I think of him...

RIP RH

^^^Well said Mick. Such a mighty, yet gentle man,.....hard to imagine him gone. Hagmeat and I were only sharing videos of his songs a few days ago. 'Meat showed me one I had'nt heard before, and it became a new favorite. Then This news.
I thought of Yours and Als ( Adorshki) guitars with this news. You're the only two owners of Ritchie like D40s that I know of here.

Thanks for that link, I had missed that. Very enjoyable "reflecting" by Richie...

What a unique style of playing he had!

Sad news, indeed.
I had the pleasure (honor) of repairing a few of his well worn (beat up tops) D-40s.
Great guy.

A musical legend for all the right reasons and none of the wrong ones. Rest in peace, Richie.

I was only starting to discover this great mans music, I`m so glad I did. His music will live on.
As John SouthernGuild mentioned, this is my current favourite.

I would`ve loved to have heard him cover a Rodriguez song.

Only just caught up with this sad news now. RIP Richie.

So many great comments already by the members here which have paid tribute to the man & which are witness to the joys he has given to many people with his music. Some great clips here of everyone's favourites - I hadn't heard that version of Won't Get Fooled Again - very cool.

Almost more important than the music itself is that everything I have seen from him in interviews or what others have said of him indicates that he was a very kind, caring, genuine & warm hearted human being. He has made his mark on this world in a very positive way. Thank you Richie.

Thanks Ralf, that's a great shot from the Guild home page. I was surprised to find that my wife was not familiar with Richie Havens when I told her he had died. After seeing his picture and a few of his videos she commented that he had the aura of a yogi on a mountain top. I thought that was a pretty good commendation.

cheers

The folks in New Hartford were blessed a couple of years ago to have Richie visit them and play for them. I remember Kim telling me how awed he was.

Damn, now I'm really sad and emotional. Wishing you double pickguards and an endless supply of mahogany and spruce, Richie!... RIP.

Just remembered, here's a few videos my buddy recorded at Sellersville, PA show we saw. Some absolutely hilarious chatter from Richie in these recordings too. What a storyteller he was!
We also got to hang out with him after the show for a bit. So nice, such a warm personality! I actually got the impression he was genuinely interested in what I had to say... which can't be said about a lot of famous people when meeting with their fans

Great little vid. Thanks! Bob was bowled over, hey....LOL.

His obit showed up in the Sydney Morning Herald here, which has a huge circulation, and hadn't twigged until I saw it there. I'll try and screenshot/link it. Syndicated from NYT, but just to show this big gentle man was loved here too.
