I've had issues with the tire pressure sensor on my '11 Outback. Cold weather sets it off. My son's '13 Impreza had the same thing. Not all the time, but enough to be a bit of a pain.

That sucks, walrus. By 2013 you'd think that all the kinks would be worked out. I'm going to guess that your winter problems were just that air pressure drops with temperature. But, I'm sure you already knew that. :)

Exactly. But someone needs to tell the sensor that!

Wouldn't you need to add air to the tire if the TPMS light comes on with a big temperature drop?

I got halfway through Bluespicky's experience with headlight lenses on my GF's old Prius when someone told me about gloss clear coat acrylic spray paint. Like new in $15 and 15 minutes!

Past a certain degree of deterioration inside the plastic, there is NOTHING that can bring it back to the "like new" transparency.
Not meaning to be a downer here, but a spray can clear coat might only temporarily disguise the damage until the sun and rain and heat and cold destroys it.

Never heard of this.

What happens if you inflate or deflate your tires? You have to pay $40 at the dealer?!?!

No, the TPMS will reflect the change in air pressure, that's their purpose in life.
But in some vehicle, if you change wheels as Chazmo did, or you simply rotate your tires, the ECM (electronic control module) will lose track of which sensor is on which wheel, and that's when they have to be re-sync'd, or re-learned by the ECM with the tool I mentioned above, or if you car brand doesn't allow the DIY procedure, with a trip at the shop.
Some vehicles (thankfully my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee is in that category) will automatically recognize the sensors in their new location (after a tire rotation) and none of this will be necessary.

I heard of people lifting their pickups and had to get the sensors reset at dealer too.

If you mean that simply jacking up the vehicle without removing the wheels requires them to take the truck at the shop for a TPMS reset, then I would say there is either something very wrong with the truck, or with the truck owner's substance/beverage intake, causing his or her recollection of the fact to be somewhat distorted.

Ran into this money grubbing scam a decade ago on my Honda when I wanted to change to snows. Since then I’ve just ignored the idiot light and check the tires with a gauge monthly or if they look low. Same way I’ve been doing it since I learned how to drive almost 50 years ago.

It appears Asian manufacturers are somewhat behind (for a change) on the TPMS relearn thingie... here it is in a nutshell (from link below):
"TPMS Vehicle relearn procedures vary by automaker. Some vehicles relearn automatically when you drive them. Others require a TPMS scan tool to complete the relearn. The process for many Asian makes and models may also require connecting a tool to the OBDII connection."

Who changes wheels/tires for the Winter anymore? There's your problem! With modern tread patterns along with brining and instant snow removal are snow tires really necessary? My Company has snow days where you work from home. The owners don't want to endanger their employees by asking them to drive in even the mildest of unpleasant weather!

Grot, that's a fair question, but winter is a lot different down on the Jersey shore than it is in New England. IMO, all season tires are not up to the task. Road crews do a fantastic job here, don't get me wrong, but I won't do without AWD and snowies.

I too have been in situations where the performance of all season tires is not up to my memory of the performance of snow tires. But since that happens only once every couple of years it is not cost effective for me to have snow tires here.

In regards to the question about complaining to Subaru in the original post:

My experience with Subaru from dealer to the corporate office was horrible. This was over the course of a year, lots of interactions and thousands of dollars. It started with a defective head gasket and deteriorated from there. Will never buy another one. I'm not one to come on and bash a company, but I still get angry about it. I know lots of people swear by them; I guess I'm the exception to the rule.

Coop, I have a close friend that had a Justy back in the '80s... What an unbelievable POS. Like you, he won't go near a Subaru. It's very true that once you've had a bad experience (or two, or ten) with a brand it's over. In my long history with cars, I've had the same bad experiences with Jeep (Chrysler) and Ford. I totally hear you. I won't go near either with a 10 foot pole.

I'm a big Subie (and used to be Honda) fan, but once bitten twice shy. I get it.

Huh. I've had all season tires on my Outback since new, and I never had an issue in the snow. Maybe 4 years ago, I was driving home from Boston after 1 - 2 feet of wet snow had already dropped and no plows out yet. People stuck everywhere, I just drove right by.
