In a fit of true anality, I was trying to figure out if Martin's website misused the word. I'm just not sure. What do you think?

When describing one of their Grand J models, they say the following (in http://www.martinguitar.com/guitars/gui ... 28lse.html) :

"This unique instrument is perfect for musicians looking to extend their creative palate and collection."

I would've said "creative palette," as if I were referring to the board artists use to mix paints etc. "Palate," as I understand it, is a sense of taste (as in the palate that is the roof of your mouth).

So, maybe it depends on how you interpret "extend the creative pa..." Are you growing your sense of taste (palate) to include the Grand J, or are you growing your arsenal of tools (palette) to be creative?

Thinking, in English and in Spanish, it makes a lot more sense, for me, the second interpretation i.e. the one related with tools...

My take, Charlie.

Have a great 2013! :D

A hug & All the best,
B.

I thought you were correct Charlie.
Palate: Roof of the mouth
Palette: Painter board used to sample colors... that would have been the correct choice here.

Another one that often gets on my nerves for some reason (probably relating to the same "anality" ) is the mix up between then and than.... why?

I agree... they used the wrong word. I believe they should have said palette as it relates more to an array of colors OR sounds..... it's a more artistic sense. Martin screwed up on that one.

I've been accused of much worse than being old school, Charlie. Don't ask me how much I feel like a dinosaur these days. :)

So, I'm hearing universal agreement that I was right. :) Tell my wife! :D

Then and than... that one totally gets on my nerves, but it's a really obvious one to judge, Pascal.

Oh, hey, and Pascal... I totally admire you for anality with regard to the language, my friend. After all, you won't have me weighing in on poor French usage/grammar. :) Rock on, Mr. purple pants.

Sad but true.
The closer I get to youngsters at work, doing most of the hiring, the more I observe an emerging kind of tech savy geniuses, who think like a computer and understand technology better and faster than (and not then  ) I ever will. Only one flaw: They're illiterate, and have no cultural background whatsoever...

 Thanks Charlie... and going back to my post above, the really weird thing is, a lot of folks at work, come to me (the French guy) with spelling / grammar questions... in English!!!!

And you're right about "then and than" being an obvious one, which is why it bothers me so much....
Again: WHY????????????

And just look at their music! I think it reflects that very thing. It's shallow and repetitious and vacuous......

They used the wrong word.

There must be a good pun about making Martin "eat their words", but I can't come up with it...

Boy, do I sense a new, possibly contentious thread here?
Again I ponder, Joe

Hey hey! We're getting old, and with old age come new responsibilities, one of them being criticizing the youth.
