What a mess; do the other drivers have liability insurance? Do you have coverage for uninsured drivers? Nasty stuff :( :(

cap'n, I dont know if the driver of the cougar had insurance or not. I'm guessing yes because of the current plates, but if they dont have insurance we're pretty much screwed. my dad has medical tied to his insurance policy, but his insurance wont cover the car if the other people dont have insurance.
Thankfully, our neighbor found a cheap car for us. an 85 rwd lesabre thats owned by a 91 year old man he knows who wants to dump the car because he hasnt been able to drive it in years, and doesnt want it sitting in the garage anymore. (the car has to be moved so the garage roof can be redone, and the guy doesnt want to have to put the car back in the garage) the guy is asking $400 for the car if the motor will turn over.

Ugh ... what a mess. When these accidents happened ... you guys called the police, no? .... and they made out reports? On the reports, the police are supposed to record both drivers' insurance carriers / policy numbers if there's coverage ... what do the police reports say? Some states operate funds that provide somewhere to go in the event of damages caused by uninsured drivers.

Way back in the day for example, it was against the law in Virginia to drive without insurance but - not if you paid the uninsured motorist's fee; in effect, you were pleading guilty/paying the fine in advance for not having coverage. The state took the money, pooled it, and made it available for claims but that was many moons ago and every state handles it differently.

I hope that Buick starts!

in the case of my accident with the caddy, yes, I called the police, filed a report, collected the other drivers insurance info, etc. I am waiting for the police report to be finished (6 days my ass)
in the case of my dad and his wagon...no, he didnt get any information at the scene. after the crash he blacked out. all he remembers is going through the intersection, and a dark colored ford pull out in front of him, then nothing, then the paramedics rushing into the other side of his car and putting him in the ambulance. he was wearing a seatbelt, but it did not work properly (bad design?- it was one of the early 90's GM cars where the seatbelt retractor was built in to the door.) It kept his head from going through the windshield, but the top of his forehead still hit the windshield above the steering wheel somewhere. My dad is currently talking to both his insurance agent and a lawyer to straighten everything out. apparently there is footage of the accidenton a traffic camera in the intersection, so that will help immensly if we can get ahold of it.
as for the buick, I havent looked at it yet. that will probably happen sometime this week. our neighbor looked at it (he's going to be working on the garage roof and needs the car moved before he starts work on the roof just incase the roof collapses or something (apparently the garage is rickety) . he said the car is in really nice shape and that its comparable to the one my dad already owns.

Ok; stay after the reports ... be a pest about them. We had an early '90s Honda with the 'racetrack' belts; the belt started moving on a track into position when the door was closed - a way to enforce wearing seatbelts ... not dependent on the driver manually strapping themselves in. Fine ... except that the whole mechanism worked off an expensive little chip under the front passenger seat which also controlled the ignition.

Best of luck to both of you ... keep the beer cold and a Guild nearby.

figured I'd give you guys an update. my dad has been seeing a chiropractor 3 times a week to straighten his back out, apparently several of his ribs were out of place. his nose will heal without surgery, it will just be a hair crooked.
we got the police report today. the other driver was an 87 year old lady who "thought she had the right of way." needless to say, an 87 year old lady shouldnt be driving. both drivers have the same insurance company again, but there are police footage of the intersection from various traffic cameras, so we're hoping for the best.
my dad is looking into buying an old silverado pickup, because nothings as reliable as an old chevy truck.
I've found a new motor and trans for my cadillac since the insurance company screwed me and wont fix anything. the motor is an older rebuilt 350 chevy truck motor from roughly 1977 (when it was made, not when it was rebuilt) with 4 bolt mains. it belongs to my neighbor. he is going out to his place in the country and will bring it back with him in 2 weeks. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that no moisture got into it. he said hes gonna tear it down and look it over to make sure everything is still in working order before he sells it. it is a long block, so I shouldnt have to go hunting for a bunch of misc pieces for it. a new camshaft and intake should be plenty for it to move around my big ass car in a timely manner. I'm also going for a 4 speed automatic with overdrive so I can put the 300 horses I'll be making to good use. (my neighbor has those too- go figure) when I get around to getting the drivetrain installed, I'll take pics and put them over in the "tech shop" section (wont be until its a decent temperature around here) .

Hi Kevin: don't know about further down in So Florida but here in Palm Beach County, there's usually one fatal accident a week involving a driver 75+ years old. But it's the kind of problem that no politician will risk messing with. Too much potential for backlash from the oldsters ... we have many oldsters here ... so ... it's an insurance problem.

The carriers raise the rates ... the people and oldsters complain to the politicians .... the politicians chide the insurance industry who, in response, explains the actuarial facts of life and tells the politicians that they could do something about it if they wanted to but ... they don't. So, we have a lot of accidents involving 75+ year old drivers ... it's the same everywhere.

I hope you get everything straightened out ok.

Late to the party as usual - but a great thread!!

I was always a bottom feeder as far as cars go - being mainly into motorcycles. In the late 70's early 80's you could pick up a reliable ride for a few hundred bucks - I took them everwhere - no matter the condition - and didn't worry about them a whit. Oh for the simple days again...

a few old pix and lots of memories -

I'm so mortified!  I should be forced to drive a Geo Metro for a week. No wait, it's out of production so it already has too much cool factor..I should be forced to wash my neighbor's Chevy Cobalt SS. While chanting: "I wish I had an Avanti. I wish I had an Avanti. Or a Supercharged Golden Hawk." :D

Hey Al, have you ever driven a Cobalt SS? They're actually a lot of fun. For a FWD car anyway...
