My brother lives in NJ & he came to visit just before Christmas. He also had a nice little gift for me - saving me some shipping. Thanks bro!

It was advertised as a a 1962 but the serial number (23631) indicates that it's a1963 which Hans verified before I bought it. Birth year guitar for me.
Might even be early '63 just like me. Like me it's got a bit of wear, scars, nicks & bruises but still looks OK from a distance.

Looks pretty original, apart from a pickguard screw I think, but I am no expert. Binding is OK. Frets are good & I really like the neck shape & feel.

At the moments it's got flat wounds on it (wound 3rd) & it has the rosewood (I think) bridge - both of which I am not used to.

It's a pleasure to play & something very different for me. It's obviously set up & designed to be a Jazz guitar, so maybe I should learn some! :D Certainly has got that smokey Jazz vibe to it on the neck position. Nice & full sounding but can start to feedback with the amp on 3 in my small playing space. I also really dig the middle position & I get a nice bite with the bridge only through the Vibrolux set on 5.

I am wondering whether to try it with another bridge with metal saddles & roundwounds to get a more rocky vibe as I can see the potential, especially on the bridge posn. I have also seen what Billy D. Light & Walter Broes can do with their Franz equipped hollowbodies & I like it! At the same I could just let it be & say "viva la difference". What say you?

Also though about a Guildsby but I wouldn't really want to add any extra holes into the body, so not sure if that's even possible.

Regardless, I am very happy with my purchase! Love this guitar. 8)

Well I've been a bit busy & the weather has been so bad that I haven't really been able to get any outside pictures until yesterday & today, so here they are. You guys always say you want a lot of pics right?

My (almost 16 years old) god-daughter loves it too. Says she can feel the "ju-ju vibes" when she plays it! She's got very good taste!

Thanks John. Happy days indeed! :D Your welcome to come by & try it.

The brother has had plenty of practice - it's the 4th guitar that's found it's way to Australia this way. You've heard of the term "Drug Mule", well he's my "Guitar Mule". He's also shipped a guitar here with another coming soon. He's had 4 Guilds come through his house - shame he doesn't play himself.

The God-daughter is a great girl. She really likes my JF30-12 as well. Great taste in music too - I've introduced her to lots of stuff but she discovers so much on her own, including Ton Waits & Leonard Cohen! Starting to play a bit, she sings quite well & is a natural performer while still being very down to earth. We want to go busking together but her mother forbids it.

Beautiful guitar!! Congratulations!
Thanks Walter. What bridge & strings do you put in your guitars? Love the tones you get but I know the key is your hands & musicality.

Thanks! Usually a Gibson or Gotoh ABR-1 Tune-a-Matic bridge, and Fende pure nickel 150's, I use a set of 10's with the two top strings replaced by an 11 and a 14.

Great guitar! The condition is really good and the reddish burst is remarkable. If you like the 'dark smoky tones' and can also get a brighter sound you like from mixing in the bridge pup you have a very versatile instrument... I wouldn't change a thing. Congratulations!

The Vibrolux is a 1964 & is a great amp. Ira Kaplan from Yo La Tengo borrowed it & used it on one of their tours to Australia. A producer friend of mine has also used it in the studio a few times.

Always glad to see my brother but even more so this time for some reason...

Remember there's a free trade agreement between Australia & the US - long may it continue!!

I'm 6'3" but she's the Karate black belt/1st Dan - she'd be protecting me - I can't see the problem myself. :)

I love that reddish burst too - wish I could get an NH F50R in that burst. You know I'm probably guilty of trying to make every guitar sound close to my "ideal" tone - I think it's probably good to let the guitar be itself & not change anything like you say. Also, it makes it easier for me to justify another Franz equipped guitar for the rockier stuff down the track  - maybe a T100D would feedback a bit less?

I am from NJ, and while I am currently living in MA I still have family and friends in NJ, so if your brother finds any more gems like that, particularly in the same year (also my birthday year) feel free to refer him to me and I will gladly drive down and pick it up. Btw, I have a search request in WTB for just such a birthday guitar, so please everyone keep those collective eyes and ears open for a fellow LTG'er!
