Hi Bluespicky,

Your 72 all hog must be some kind of incredible withh all of those years to open up and get mojofied!
I have been playing mine tonight with some fingerpicked songs and played softly...wow!
I have to keep pinchin myself! It really is an inspiring guitar to play.
The stock strings are brand new and are just starting to settle down and the sound is deepening even more.
I have been Gassing for a Guild quite a while now and this one spoke to me from the first strum...I was considering a Taylor 114   because of it's deep sounding lows (and price was right) but I did find it to be a bit too bright for my own taste. This Guild has the depth and also the not overly bright, full warm sounding mids that still pack a punch...As the strings settle in the highs are starting to ring clear..I do love Rosewood, but there is something very sonorous about mahogany. Some call it nasaly, but combined with this deepness, it is anything but nasal. Too have a hog top as well...never thought I would ever buy one...this guitar really did suprise me. My original aim was for a vintage spruce topped D25 or a D4, but being up here in Canada, never got my hands on one to hear how great they are.
So things unfolded the way they did and being able to make payments really helped me to get this guitar.
Well that's my report for now...back to some pickin! :D

Good stuff Randy.

I know you will put it through it's paces and keep us informed as she ages. Good on 'ya pal.

Hey Graham, this guitar is already getting to be well used and she's a keeper...my 12 string is getting a little jealous
Say Hi to Tennesee for me! Are you going to drop into Nashville? Gruhn Guitars is well worth a visit. They usually have some good used Guilds there...I just checked online and there are some D40's and also an F40 maple (Nice) Last time I was there they had a guitar up on the wall signed by John Prine...think it was a Martin.
They are open 9:30-5:30 Mon to Sat...400 Broadway in Nashville 615 256-2033
Texas will be a great time I am sure! Have a great trip!

Hi Randy; thanks for the close-ups, been curious about quality on the GAD's, looks pretty impressive from here. What you said about quiet fingerpicking, yeah, that's one of my favorite qualities, if it's anywhere near mine it's just astounding in its versatility. Can you put about 300 hours on it and let us know how the frets are holding up? That's the "mileage" I got out of the original frets, only took about 18 months, but I bet you could do it quicker'n that!..

Yep, I'll take some pictures in about 6 months to see how the frets are holding up...I am still finding out about it's versatility...it's weakest area is heavy strumming, but I am going to try some mediums on it next string change to see what she will do. It is incredible in the fingerpicking department. I suspect it is not as loud as the archbacks but it has a big deep ponderous bottom to it which I love...it's sound is what I would call delicous! Big bottom, not boomy though, punchy mids and very balanced sounding highs....all spectrums seem to really work well together...That's why I couldn't put it down when I played it the first time...there was no second guessing...it had the sound I had been looking for....the only other guitar with a deep sound like it was a Westerly built JF30 I played last summer but could not afford...$1600 (yikes)...but I would have gladly paid it if I had the coin ...it sounded that good and was in mint condition! It was sold in less than a week.
I tried putting a shim under the saddle of this one last night to see if raising the action would help with the heavy strumming...let me tell ya, the difference in tone was noticeable...never let a tech tell you shims won't affect the sound...they do even if it is marginal.
That's enough of a break for my fingers...back to pickin

Sounds like they've managed to keep that great feel. As far as tone, my D40 (flatback) really surprised me this weekend with the strength of its bass, I hadn't played it for a while. It may actually be louder than the D25 now, but the '25 does have better overall balance and is magnitudes easier to play and they're both set up with lights. I would never shim a saddle either, but what I did notice when you were describing action is that it seemed about a 64th low compared to the specs on Guild's website. Of course that could be explained by casual measurement technique, which I use myself when I just want to check it, as long as its at 6-64ths on my ruler I'm happy...but could it actually be a tad low as you're thinking?

Just checked it again and it is 5/64" on HI E and 6/64" Low E
I must have misread the ruler in my excitement
