Michael Nesmith with a Guild 12 string of some sort for those folks who might read before checking the link.

There goes the "surprise" aspect...

Yup, Papa Nez playing a F-212XL!

Sorry about the surprise. A while back I got really annoyed with posts that just said "Guild sighting" with no further information. They are hard to search for and require following a link which may or may not lead to something interesting. I just got in the habit of providing the missing information since it never occurred to me that there was an intended surprise.

Not a problem... 8)

Thanks for bringing that one back, Terry.
Not only has it been one of my favorite songs to play and sing for years, but also one of the early tunes I picked up/picked on when I was first trying to figure out how things worked with these wooden boxes with strings on 'em.

Cheers,
Joe

Yeah, been singing that song since about '70 or so, myself.

Just for the record, it wasn't really much of a surprise anyway since it had been previously posted here.[/quote:2tz2k0hu]

How thoughtless of me to have neglected memorizing every single thread on this site...I mean, there are only 4,700...

Why would anyone w/ any sense bother? Life's much too short to be so anal-retentive...[/quote:q6tzn1m3]

What? Being anal-retentive is not the Meaning of Life and a major component of the Pursuit of Happiness?

Seriously, to the extent that material posted on LTG is archival and will be searched by a Visitor From the Future, it is helpful to have posts on the same subject grouped together or at least have links from the newer to the older. However, the moderators can certainly enforce that by merging threads and moving posts if it becomes important. So, while it is certainly useful and beneficial to have folks search and then post material in existing threads, it is by no means a requirement for being a good LTG citizen.

That's great! To the best of my memory, that's the first time I've seen him anywhere since the Monkees. That video takes him up several notches in my estimation, not least because of his taste in guitars.

Me too. I always thought he had real talent when it came to the Monkees. Though I am guilty of being a fan and not missing their show as a youngster! At least he could play the guitar when it all stated. I had lost track of him and did not know he had continued playing music. What a pleasant surprise to see this video.

Yeah, he started the 1st National Band after he left the Nonkees (remember "Joanne"?), and put out several albums, as well are having a lot of folks cover his songs (Nesmith's "Mary, Mary" was recorded by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, while "Different Drum" was recorded by Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys. "Pretty Little Princess", written in 1965, was recorded by Frankie Laine and released as a single in 1968 on ABC Records. Later, "Some Of Shelly's Blues" and "Propinquity (I've Just Begun To Care)" were made popular by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on their 1970 album Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy)...then he created Pacific Arts, a media company that put out several pretty cool movies (Repo Man,Tapeheads, and Timerider, as well as a few TV programs - my favorites were "Elephant Parts" and "Television Parts")

Dude has kept himself pretty busy!

 Thanks Terry, I've enjoyed that one too. Actually I've been playing that one since you brought my attention to it. Nice one to play and sing. One of those 'lost classics' ( at least to me!) that live on in the mind long after radio airplay has left it behind. Glad to have it back again.

The Criterion Collection just released a Blu-ray of the Monkees' movie "Head"...

http://www.criterion.com/films/27527-head

Quite a time capsule, with some remarkable music, esp. "Porpoise Song." Mr. Nesmith had an admirable quality of being "in it, but not of it" that was unique for a pop-television figure of the time. You can really see it in the original screen test auditions for the band included on the disc.

He must have given the suits severe agida, what with having a mind of his own and all.

In fact Mickey was the only one who had to learn a new instrument. They just didn't get no respect because they were known as the "preFab Four" due to all the session men performing on most of the first two albums.
Nez himself kinda started the whole implosion by publicly denouncing the fact that they weren't ALLOWED to play on the first two albums.
By the "Headquarters" sessions they were writing, playing and producing the whole thing.
Remember the very cool theme song that closed the show in the second season, "For Pete's Sake"?--written and guitar played by Peter.
Monkees.net had a GREAT recording sessionography link I tried to post but sadly Geocities says it's no longer good. :(
As for "Head", it's got some weaknesses but hey, Jack Nicholson co-wrote and produced while he was between biker flicks, Frank Zappa makes a cameo, and one of my favorite Nesmith rockers "Circle Sky" is in it. For you really hardcore fans, or just the curious, note the Buffalo Springfield connection(s) cited here:
http://www.austinchronicle.com/music/20 ... ircle-sky/
The real problem with "Head" was that by the time it was released the hippies didn't give 'em no respect and the rest of the world had moved on to "heavy" stuff (anybody remember "In-a-Gadda-da-Vida? )...they were stereotyped as "bubblegum" (anybody remember THAT label? )
In closing I'd just like to say can you imagine what a blast it must have been to be a young hip musician making a TV show, then going to recording sessions and then clubbing on Sunset Strip in '66 and '67, when you were young enough to have enough energy to get away with it? And the world wasn't nearly as dangerous as it became in the mere space of a couple of years?
A Monkees fan and proud of it! 'Nuff said!
:D
