+1 on the D25. Look for one from the mid 70's made at the Westerly factory. I just picked up a '76 for $350 and it's a treasure. So nice to strum a guitar that's really an icon...not expensive, not a museum piece...just one hell of an instrument that was made...to be played!

For a Guild dread @ ~$600, I would watch eBay for a '70s era D-25 (spruce top, arched mahogany back), D-35 (spruce top, flat mahogany back), or G-37 (spruce top, arched maple back), or an '80s D-25, D-35, or D-30 (which is similar to the G-37). I would think the D-25 would sound most similar to your D-4 (doesn't the D-4 have an arched hog back?), the flat-backed D-35 would be brighter and a bit more balanced in the trebles, and the maple G-37/D-30 would be bright, smooth, and balanced. Of these, the G-37/D-30 would probably be the most expensive... but they still can be had on eBay for ~$600 (I picked up my '74 G-37 for $550 in July06, and love it). Happy hunting! Dave

Every Geezer needs a D25, & should be $600 or less.
Gotta love them D25's. :)

I own one Guild here (among some high priced Martins) and it is often my favorite guitar. It cost me right near what your budget allows (I found a very nice deal, but I believe it is not hard to get a deal similarly with some haggling.) It is the Tacoma made DV-4. See if you have any local Guild dealers and if they have one in stock. Giver 'er a spin. I was just curious about Guilds one day, played a couple D-40's and this DV-4 and the DV-4 just grabbed me. Distinct, clear, loud, woody, tone. Well built. Nice case.

The current (Tacoma) DV-4 is quite different from the former DV-4's. Mine is 2007. It is all solid wood, flat back, mahogany (the DV-6 is rosewood, I don't have any experience with that one.) It has scalloped bracing, a real plus for the sound I like. It has a satin finish and is a very simple looking guitar. But the sound and playability rival lots of guitars at much higher costs in my opinion. I am very happy to have purchased this guitar.

My recommendation, check out a recent DV-4. I don't disagree with the D25 recommendations, by the way, they're fine guitars. I can say I favor this DV-4 over those others I've played, and having bought it new, I have a lifetime warranty, worth a lot assuming the guitar stays here, and it probably will.

I suggest you might want to go outside your "Guild Box" . . . . the world doesn't revolve around Guild . . . although it's a damn good place to be!

Kydog,
Gotta echo the sentiments here concerning the early (70s/very early 80s) D-25 as an outstanding option.

The world doesn't revolve around Guild? Them's fightin' words around here :D

Well maybe not, but Guild does revolve around the world: NY, Hoboken, Westerly, Corona, China, Tacoma, Hartford, now maybe Mexico...

The appropriate reaction, Jerr, and I'm sure there's more of us who are lost for words. Had this been one of those sentimental American movies I wouldn't have been surprised had Roman's D55 been given the line "Don't you love me anymore?". Brings tears to one's eyes, doesn't it.
