What does music do for you?

Here's one thing it does for me - the experiences that I've had with music are stuck to the songs, so whenever I hear an old song, I'm back where I was. When I hear Beach Boys,, I'm riding in my buddy's convertible. When I hear Johnny Cash I'm in my Dad's '66 Cadillac.

Saw something on PBS last night about aging issues and the program featured a guy (music therapist?) who interviews moderately impaired dementia patients in order to take a "music history" (my phrase) of their lives. The idea is that as their dementia progresses music from the person's life can be played for them in an effort to help them to remember who they are. Music really can be a magical elixir. It was for my dad who died from Alzheimer's.

I’m with you Dread. Songs take me back to a time long ago. There are certain band, The Dead, Little Feat, CCR and others that remind me of the people who turned me on to them. Memories of concerts (remember them?), road trips, formal girlfriends. Just many things from the first 25 years of my life.
