Was just checking in on and refreshing muscle memory for the intro and bridge of the Dead's Playing In the Band for tonight's About Half Dead jam/practice.

Last night I was working on John Prine's Paradise (waltz). Simple song but I just played it for the first time ever at an acoustic get together last Friday.

I've been working on a few things:
-- Cleaning and speeding up my picking. I am rooted in economy picking, but I want to be able to alternate pick faster.
-- Trying to get a more complete and immediate grasp of the fretboard, so I'm trying to solidify triads and extensions in all positions of the fretboard.
-- Also learning some songs to sing harmony duets with my wife. This is the most fun. :C)

I think it was the very first Arlington Crank, and it was my turn. I started "Paradise" by Prine and our late member Guildmark not only knew the song well, but did some of the best harmony you can imagine. Somebody that was there has audio of that song from back then, I wish I did, but Mark's harmony gave me goosebumps.

Every morning I take a two hour, 6-1/2 mile walk, which gives me lots of time just to think.
Today, a song popped into my head that I hadn't heard or thought about in ages.
I listened to it on-line, printed off the chords and melody tab and started to learn it:
"Sleepwalk" by Santo and Johnny
I don't have a steel guitar, but will make do without one.
It's another good exercise to get me out of my comfort zone, and play more difficult music.

Forgive me if this is posted in the wrong forum, but it seems like the best place to inquire about a song.
One of my favorite tunes is "Scotch and Soda", by the Kingson Trio.
Ages ago I learned a sanitized (simple) version, which never satisfied me, since among its other shortcomings, it didn't include the intro., and had an incorrect outro.
When I started to play again, after more than 40 years, I began a quest to track down an accurate version of the music, (accurate to me meaning a score faithful to a recording such as the version played at their final concert) including carefully watching various videos of the group and individual members playing it to see if I could see what their left hands were playing.
A printed version of the score that I purchased in a music store, proved to be useless (as my music teacher told me many commercially available scores of popular songs often are).
My efforts have produced a version that is close, but still has a couple of errors, and I wonder if any more experienced, discerning or trained musicians here know an accurate version.
Please and thanks

This, by the way, is the version I am trying to learn.

Song I wrote last night called "9 Dinners Tom". I'm banking that it's the only song in the world with that title. Quick barre chord change from Bm7->Dmaj7->Dm7 is harder than it should be.

Longnose Gar,
Are you playing all three as barred chords, and is it necessary to play them this way if the changes are giving you difficulty?
The last two could easily be played as non-barred versions in the second, and first and second frets respectively.

I have to go to YouTube for help quite a bit. This might not be the rendition of the song you're looking for, but there are 3 or 4 other lessons on the song there on You Tube.

Then there's this.

Learning from a recording is probably worthy of it's own thread. When looking for bass parts/lines the Gold Standard is a transcription. That means someone listened very carefully to a recording, wrote down what they heard and repeated the process until they felt they had captured exactly what was played. The quality of the transcription then depends upon the talent and dedication of the transcriber.

Given what you have said you tried I would consider
  • Including the word "transcription" in your searches
  • Look for people who will transcribe for a fee and hopefully find someone who is affordable and produces quality work.
  • Look for tools and techniques that will help you transcribe and do it yourself

I like the voicing of the barre chords better on my ES-175. Plus open Dm7 is not friendly to my fat fingers. lol. Thanks for asking!

West R Lee,
Thanks for the quick reply.
I'm familiar with both of these videos, the first one being closer to what I'm looking for, but it doesn't advance my knowledge of the song.

I wouldn't have guessed the Kingston Trio if I had just heard the song. Interesting.

Are you looking to get the proper chords dialed in? I might be able to dig a little. My instructor is big on jazz and the intro and outro are jazz sounding chords.

JohnW63,
What I'm looking for are the finishing touches to what I have put together as the chords that match the "final Concert" version of the song I posted above. If your instructor is able to check it against the song and make any corrections, I would be very appreciative.
I'll pm you with details.
And thank you for your help.

The digital/internet age has provided some wonderful tools/programs/apps for learning songs. (Many YouTube “instructional” vids are either dead wrong from the start, or just loose guides that steer you in the right direction, but don’t really show you the whole song)

I learned by listening to records, and often slowed the records down to pick out fast parts, which was a pain having to make up for the drastic drop in pitch. Today there are lots of easy to use programs/apps that allow you to slow down a song without any change in pitch whatsoever! Many also automatically detect keys…and chords!! Kids have it really good nowadays! Between YouTube and programs like these, you can learn countless tunes on guitar in the comfort of your own bedroom without having to figure it all out by yourself.

Midnight Toker,
Using four different printed versions of the music, and watching videos of either the group or individual members playing the song, I have come up with a version that is close to correct. What I am seeking are the finishing touches, and hoped that perhaps another member here knows the song and has a version that is better than mine.
