I'm celebrating the anniversary, more or less, of my OM120, which was a Black Friday special at Sweetwater last year. I'd actually been to Sweetwater in Ft. Wayne about 11 months before that, and an OM120 had whispered to me. I'd vowed going into that day not to buy a guitar, and so I didn't, but the memory of the guitar kept nagging at me, and when the Black Friday deal went up, I couldn't resist.

My OM120 is not a great guitar, and it doesn't quite live up to the memory of the one in the showroom. It's a bit bright, perhaps. But it's very good and very comfortable.

Well, since this was posted yesterday, after getting home from Happy Hour, I opened the atrium and grabbed the Breedlove Oregon Concert Rogue. I guess my mood was BLUE, so that's what I did. Sat on the bed and played Outbound Plane and Stars Go Blue for sure. I know I did a few others but can't remember now. Playing on the bed is my jam!

That is one boootiful guitar, Tom. How's it holding up in the glass room? I really am a sucker for herringbone, and it looks so nice against that sea of blue!

The atrium does well for the guitars in general. As it's enclosed on all sides by house it tends to get a tad hotter than the inside temp in summer, and a bit cooler than inside in winter. But all within tolerable ranges. And the fact that we're not actively heating/cooling makes it a whole lot easier to humidify.

As you say, it's beautiful and that white herringbone purfling and rosette really sets off the deep blue!! Wish I could put it in your hands! I think you'd be impressed with the sound. Myrtlewood and spruce is a great combo!

Gosh, that's beautiful, James. Love to see some more pix of that! Maybe when you switch it out next, take some more of it outgoing!

Thanks, it (like my 68 Starfire) was my maternal Grandfathers... they became mine when he passed, but due to an unstable living situation followed by a bit of a falling out with my family, they got tucked away in my parents basement (clean/dry/finished... my father ran a small Engineering firm with a couple employees down there) for decades. I finally got them back a couple years ago. I had to do some major cleaning and set up on the Framus. Here are a few shots of before and after.

The JF30-12.
(On the left, for anyone who didn’t recognize it instantly.)
A bit of distortion in the photo makes the F-512 look smaller, but they are the same size.
I only take one with me when we go to Vermont for 5-6 weeks. Had the F-512 up there for most of Sept and Oct.
So the JF30-12 is out and getting lots of attention for all of November.

So I have a two hour "an evening with" gig coming up on 12/2, and since it's local and kind of special, I'm bringing out my F44 - which mostly stays home these days. I'll be bringing that, plus the "new" M240 Troubadour, and possibly my DCE1 too. So it'll be an all Guild evening, no matter what. So those are the guitars I've been playing the last couple of weeks. And I've been playing them lots.

Thought I needed to have a picture of my original owner since new ‘66 Starfire II with my Gurian J-R (Jumbo Rosewood) acoustic that I bought new at Sam Ash, Hempstead, NY (Long Island) in either late 1974 or a bit later in 1975.

As per usual there’s a story that goes along with the Gurian. I spent about 2 years “living off the fat of the land” after college starting in June 1972 traveling between east coast NYC area, Midwest, and ending up in Vancouver, BC (Canada). That year I put 25,000 miles on my Chevy Nova with a bunch of my college “low lifes” with gasoline as little as 19.9 cents/gallon in Colorado. To make a long story short, I decided to make the next year’s journey with a college friend hitchhiking from NYC area to Vancouver, liberating myself from the car. I got in with the local Vancouver music scene upon which I got turned on to “acoustic” after being only “electric” with my Starfire.

I spent some time in Vancouver music stores buying strings for one of my gracious hosts that let me play his acoustic guitar (my style being a bit rough compared to other acoustic players, bending strings and vibrato, etc.) I checked out all the guitars to compare sound wise and playability - Guild, Martin, Gibson, Ovation, and a few others. There was one guitar that stood out from both sound and playability, it was the Gurian.

It’s shown with a new DiMarzio pickup that replaced the old one that developed a short in the integral cord at the pickup that I discovered as I was getting ready to record a track in a studio, I fixed it by tapping on the pickup and then played away….

Indian Rosewood back and sides (the model would be a “J-B-R” if the rosewood was Brazilian), ebony fretboard, spruce topIMG_4093.jpegWOjuA-jlcsavchklygaizrp22u3rxz.jpeg
