By the way West, I'm with CJD... that's one of the handsomest looking fireplaces I've laid eyes on. I love the arch. And what's the story on the screen? It looks like a nice piece of handwork.

Thank you very much guys. If you recall, I had mentioned that the builder wasn't too keen on a bonafide wood burning fireplace, but what could he say.....he worked for me. Anyway, the stone mason's supervisor was a Hispanic man names Angel. Angel was the only one in his crew that spoke English.......and he spoke very little.

Angel came and found me on the jobsite and asked what I wanted in a fireplace. I spoke slowly, but precisely and described what I wanted to Angel one time. I came back the next day and like magic, he had build exactly what I wanted....arched hearth, 3 tiered stone mantel and from outside beam to beam......just an amazing craftsman (there were 4 of them on the fireplace).

Mrs. West belongs to a mail order group that sells some pretty quality household items......it's actually "Southern Living", the magazine that sponsors the organization. That's where she ordered the screen (and the fireplace tools).

The firebox is actually prefabbed as builders loathe building fireboxes, and they can be bought cheaper than they can be built. A steel fabricated box, lined with fire brick, the opening is 40" wide, by 36" tall, by 28" deep. I didn't want to have to wrestle wood into it, wanted it big enough to burn about 6 to 8 sticks at a time, wanted it to draft well and didn't want it to overpower the room. We got lucky on all counts....we do like our fireplace.

Thank you guys, I appreciate you.

This is the first time that area lakes here have been frozen over since 1983. We haven't seen temps over freezing since last Wednesday night. That's almost unheard of here. The weather channel said today that the lowest temp on record for Miami is 28, tonight they're expecting sub freezing temperatures. I'm sure that doesn't bode well for citrus crops.

Up here in the northwest corner today, it was 57 degrees and partly cloudy! So, I put the Guilds aside for a while and spent 3 hours on my bike doing a bird census.
I'm now dealing with windburn! The fun never ends!

When the rain stops around here, we don't hesitate!

Its been tough here too Joe.... Some days I have to wear a vest, and now I think I'll have to replace the winshield wipers soon. A couple of times I stepped in a puddle that was pretty deep and my feet got wet...I guess its been tough all over.  Steffan

El nino maybe, Jerry. We're a lot warmer than most of Florida for the past week or two. go figure. People down there are wondering how to winterize their motorhomes, no joke. Its pretty east to take though. Its like early spring combined with the shorter days of winter. Stay warm, and say hi to those creatures of yours, Steffan :D

As I write this its 9 deg F here in Central Massachusetts...maybe four or five inches of snow on the ground, but its rock hard. Most streets are clear to pavement at least, think it was mid 30's yesterday afternoon...

Have a friend in the West Midlands (Bewdley), where he says they haven't much snow...they seem to have been protected by the hills all around...but everyone else is buried!

Now, I expect you guys in FL to have been running the electric heaters and such long enough for it to be warm and balmy when I come to visit at the end of the month...I don't wish to be wearing Thermax and wool

... No problem Bill; running the heat full-boogie with doors and windows open. Orlando day-time highs in January can be in the 50s/60s ... just far enough north to catch the edge of crappy Atlanta weather; can be 10-12 degs cooler there than here, 150 miles south ... anything made of Gore-tex and you should be okay  .

Depends on which side of the Cascade Mountains you're on. On the West side of the mountains where Joe, Steffan and others reside is pretty mild, winter or summer. East of the Cascades, the weather can be a bit more severe. Hotter in the summer and Colder in the winter. This is true of Oregon, Washington and BC.

Edit: Rain fall is vastly different on the East side of the Cascades also. Far less of it. If Bellingham gets around 40 inches of rain in a normal year, much of the eastern part of Washington is 12 inches or less.
