Re: Amature Smut ---> '73 S-100

Well.. I got an update from my luthier.

The good news is, I should be ok w/o a neck re-set.
It's a tad loose at the joint, but he says we can live w/ it for now.

The bad news is the frets.
He said the frets could use a re-fret or he could just try and just try and dress them,
(I think he sensed I don't have too much $$$) but some are lifted so hard that he can fit a string under them.

I suggested to him if we just punch them down why wouldn't they comeback up again,
as the wood is already opened up. I opted for the best solution, re-fret.

The good news is, he's a magician. It should be AMAZING when I get it back.
He implied he should not have a problem making the action great all along the neck.
I'm confident it will play and sound SUPER SWEET when I get it back!

The bad news is, it's going to cost me a small fortune! hehe

Oh well, as mentioned before, them's is the breaks.
I think I'll forward the bill to the seller to see if she can get some cash back from her buddy
(the guys she sold it for).
Not gonna break her balls over it or anything because she's a great seller,
but gonna give it a shot, as I've got nothing to lose.

In the end it's gonna be a great guitar, but I will have payed through the nose.
Oh well, lesson learned. Next time, if I can't get the guitar to where I want it quickly,
it's going right back to the seller.

Looking forward to finally getting it back! He estimates ~ the 21st of July.

Thank for all your help everyone,
Tomek.

The really good news is, if you survive the bill, that guitar is going to play and feel so fine, you will forget all about the bill. It's not worth living with worn frets, might save bucks but ultimately just prolongs the time til you have the thing working at its full potential.

I've had a couple guitars refretted. In both cases, the transformation was dramatic. (My favorite tech is a wizard too.) Good luck with it. Let us know how it comes out.

A random S-100 question: is there a certain timeline for pickguard colors on these? Mine's black but it seems like I also see clear ones on similar vintage guitars like your new one.

Mine's a '77, and the pickguard is clear.

Weak!

Well, it sounds to me like you'll rest easier if the work gets done now, so good luck!

(Makes me think I should stop complaining about my S300 for a bit. Or bite my tongue until after it's been to the shop.) ;)

Crazy. My '77 and its twin brother that lives a block away have three ply black pickguards. Of course they're both sunburst finishes which could explain things.

Makes me think that too.
