Now what the hell is with these bridge pins?

Yup, that's a '70's S-100 alright. Some dings and lots of finish checking. But if you're like me you're gonna dig the hell out of the pups and the neck. Nice score.

And yup yup, that's a Muller bridge. The "pins" are to adjust the bridge height, and yours are screwed way too far out. The two screws sit in holes in the body and you can screw them up or down to adjust the height of the bridge. Start off with the bridge all the way down and the screws screwed in all the way then work up from there. That might help with the issue of action.

Here's a pic of the bridge on mine. You can kinda see the screw height is about the same or slightly higher than the string height:

Re: Amature Smut ---> '73 S-100

Thanks Guys!
I'm familiar with guitar setup, and I've taken her after far as I can (80% there).

Just took her into the Luthier after taking these "before" pics to take her another 15% further.

First thing he commented on is the bridge.
The nut which is sticking up, is actually longer than the one which is "ok" height?
I think he's considering replacing the bridge...

I have told him I would like the following:

-punch the frets down, level, and dress them
-try and drop the action down (hopefully the fret leveling will help with that)
-re-do / clean-up crappy fret repair on two frets near the top
-deal with the messed up bridge bolts
-replace all stripped screws, and fill / re-tap any worn-out holes
-remove and lube the truss rod
-lots of little things

Is it possible mine is not a stock bridge? Looks like it is.. hmmm
I will use your picture to show him what it should look like.

Thanks again,
Tomek

Sorry, didn't mean to imply you didn't know about setups. ;)

Yes, the bridge is stock and replacing it with something else will change the feel. Rescue it!

We should get danerectal into this thread. He has experience in this area.

Good luck!

Re: Amature Smut ---> '73 S-100

It's all good my man!
Better safe than sorry.. Share the knowledge! Keep the advise comming!

I'd better talk to my Luthier some more..
He didn't say he wants to replace the bridge but he was very currious about it.
Perhaps he wants to find the right replacement parts (bolts and rollers).

It would be great if you could get danelectro in here!

Cheers, Tomek

Yeah, he's a little more up on the roller bridges as he's had to do some work on his S-100's. From what I gather parts are difficult to come by. It'll be interesting to hear what you find out. Is that high E roller gold? Maybe it came from another one of these bridges. And are those screws seated properly? It would be strange if those are longer than they should be because they appear to be the correct ones.

Still, I think you'll be happy with it. Or I would anyway. Too bad you have to get the work done on it first though.

Re: Amature Smut ---> '73 S-100

Ya that high E roller is gold I think..
It's all worn our (barley any grove left) and stuck on the thread (won't move).

The screws thread into the body properly but due to their length one sticks up too high.
I'm guessing it's off another bridge... I don't even need one for the high E
side as the bridge barely drops low enough even with it completely out.

It does all seem a little strange at this point in time...

Ya, it's too bad I had to take her in, but she's in great hands.
Some of the best in North America I'm told.

Fingers crossed!

When Danerectal shows up maybe he'll have some insight. He could tell you if there's anything different about your bridge.

I took some pics of my '74 if you want to see the bridge up close (and so I could play with my new camera). Go here if you wanna take a look.

Hey, no problem. Like I said it gave me a chance to mess around with my new camera too! ;)
Hope it helps you get your issues resolved. Pictures are about the most help I can give.

Actually, it's not the nicest S-100C ever - Danerectal's is. Seriously. His is practically mint.

You can see pics of his guitars here. He has two more S-100's besides the carved one, as well as an S-90, a bass, and an acoustic.

Mine has plenty of dings and scuffs and whatnot, and a good bit of finish checking that is growing. But I dig the hellouttuvit!

Does a one-legged duck swim in a circle? ;) Asking me if I have pics of my guitars is like asking a parent if they pictures of a newborn!

Round of pics when I first got it

A later round of pics

Comparing the '74 and '96

Good luck!

I'm out of the running, but I have a proposition for you. If you get it I'd like to work out a deal for the tailpiece and mounting screws (for the tailpiece). You could pm me to discuss. Plus, not that it matters, but the bridge could not possibly be for an S-300. They used a slightly different variation of the same design to accommodate the closer proximity of the tailpiece.

I would leave it in, otherwise it could shift compromising your intonation. If you don't want to mess with buying a whole bridge just for the posts, you could cut the one that's too long down to size. I have a bridge that has mismatched posts which appear to be original otherwise. I ended up buying a gold bridge to replace it because I only had a gold tailpiece to replace the stop-bar that someone had added.

All in all, I'd say you've got a nice example of one of the finest solid body electric guitars ever built.

Re: Amature Smut ---> '73 S-100

Hi Dane,
I was thinking the same thing....
I would not keep the bolt out, just making an example of what the lowest the bridge will go is.
Also onboard with you about just cutting the bolt that is too long to length...

If I do get that brdige, You can have what ever you need :)
We'll see what happens six days from now....

Thanks for chimming in!

Cheers, Tomek

PS - I miss her already :(

I think I need to get some better (read: outside) pictures of the flock. If you decide not to pursue the bridge/tailpiece, you should let me know, as I'm definitely in the market for part or all of the auction.

I overlooked an obvious example of your rescue skills:

You took care of that upside down TRC. A chronic and debilitating condition of many used Guilds. :wink:

Whew! That was a close one! :wink: :lol: :wink: :lol:

Ok, carry on...

Re: Amature Smut ---> '73 S-100

I've heard that way the chi flows into the guitar, not out! ;)
LOL! I didn't even notice that.. You've got a good eye for detail.

Man you guys should have seen it before I got man hands on it.
I wondered man, how could anyone play this thing..
To each their own, when it comes to setup, but come 'on.

Which brings me to another point.
Perhaps buyer beware when you see missing of backward TRCs.
Someones been messing with it, and it's likely they shouldn't have been.

I'm still a little scared the neck might not be true, that's why I brought her in.
It would suck if it's a little twisted or need a reset... Don't get me all worried again :? hehe

Naw, I'm sure everything will be fine. I just have to joke about the upside down TRC's. It's such a common thing. :lol:

Re: Amature Smut ---> '73 S-100

Man, I really didn't like what the guy before me did with it! hehe

Those bridge pins, the setup, I mean come 'on! Have some respect already! :roll:
And he considers himself a musician! huh! What's interesting is he actually make good cuts.
Makes you wonder how some of these people know so little about the instruments they play.

Thanks for the reassurance. It's OK right now (I'm very picky ((pardon the pun)),
so I'm hopping the doctor will bring her there w/o major surgery.
I brace myself for the worse, but don't know even to tell at this point.
Ah the waiting game...
