Man, I always trim them. Not only do untrimmed strings look bad and scratch up the headstock, but I invariably impale myself on them if I don't trim them. Back in the 60's I remember people getting grief if they trimmed their strings. It was almost considered elitist or overly fussy. Kind of a reverse-snobbery thing. Especially among folk singers, whose anti-establishment sentiments ran high, trimming was seen as comparable to wearing a suit and tie or having one's hair groomed too fastidiously. Although I shared many of their social perspectives and have never been a fan of ties or fastidious hairstyles, I've always been an advocate for trimming those darned strings, for purely practical reasons.

BASIC TOOL KIT FOR CHANGING STRINGS

When I bought my Gibson J-45 in 1970, I also purchased these two items. The J-45 has long ago gone by the wayside and been replaced by a number of other guitars, but these are still here from that original purchase....40 years ago!

Did I get my money's worth, you think?

No way am I going to argue in favor of untrimmed strings in this thread but I will note there was a period of time when trimming wound bass guitar strings was supposedly guaranteed to cause the winding to unravel and ruin the string. Probably one of those urban myths but I did coil my string ends for a time as a result.

I was waiting to see who would be the first to notice (good eye).
They are indeed 40 years old, or at least I bought them 40 years ago....I think it was sometime after....Pearl Harbor?

Cheers,
Joe

I coil 'em. I think maybe it's cause my mother would never let me go out and play 'til I cleaned up my room so I developed "Felixungeritis". Even the Paxil doesn't mitigate the symptoms.

Paxil only did so much; never really cleared the OCD, but removed ambition & interest instead. I gave it up, but still have lots of samples lying around .

And you know the world would be a sorry mess without ambition and neat-freaks!
