Man, I always trim them. Not only do untrimmed strings look bad and scratch up the headstock, but I invariably impale myself on them if I don't trim them. Back in the 60's I remember people getting grief if they trimmed their strings. It was almost considered elitist or overly fussy. Kind of a reverse-snobbery thing. Especially among folk singers, whose anti-establishment sentiments ran high, trimming was seen as comparable to wearing a suit and tie or having one's hair groomed too fastidiously. Although I shared many of their social perspectives and have never been a fan of ties or fastidious hairstyles, I've always been an advocate for trimming those darned strings, for purely practical reasons.
