I’ve been talking with Steve about some details and would like your opinions.

Binding: go with original style wbw or tortoise. I like both…

Bridge pins: bone, ebony, ivoroid, other? I prefer warm to bright tone.

I’m having him go with a stain on the back and sides. Probably mahogany. Thoughts on what might look best on the maple?

We are going with all new bracing. He doesn’t want to have to guarantee the old braces against cracking in the future. I’m totally ok with this and I think it’s understandable. I’m sure others will disagree. I’ve basically given him free reign to do what he thinks will bring the most out of the guitar for my playing style.

Thoughts?

After sealer, primer, and tobacco brown topcoat, this won’t be very noticeable.
Your repaired tail block looks great, Guildy!!!!! I agree that after you sand, and pore-fill that will not be noticeable at all once finishing is complete. I'm a little confused about what I'm seeing though... Was a new block added to the interior or is that big block of wood I see a remaining clamp? In any case, the question I'm getting at is how did you cleat the repair?

To be clear, I’m not doing the work. So I’m not sure on your question. It looks to me as if he added to the block maybe to clear the inside of the repair.

Looks to me like he added a corner (1) to get a bigger surface and later added a larger block (2) to have something behind the repaired area. He might leave the two new pieces permanently and just cut them smaller to fit once all is stabilized.

The New Hartford F-30 Aragon used only tortoise binding for the back but a mixture of tortoise on the side and a black white black binding to separate the top from the tortoise binding.

Not always. Mrs. Fro's F30 Traditional has only tortoise shell binding on top and bottom. Don't make me look up the year :) but my recollection is that she bought it between LMG II and III.

Can you double check that on the actual guitar? Tortoise meets spruce without any other layer in between?
Ralf
Is that unusual or just unusual on a Guild? I think I’ve seen tortoise binding alone an a lot of spruce topped guitars.

As an adjunct to all the issues and opinions sought and given regarding this reclaimation project, I just want to say that this is far and away the most interesting thread I've followed at any guitar site in the last five years, since I began playing again.
Watching this instrument slowly rise from the dead is enlightening and very informative.
Always look forward to the next installment and the accompanying photos.

Thanks guys. I live for this stuff. I blame my wife. She had my 1890’s Bay State parlor I inherited fixed up by Steve and that has led to a headlong dive into vintage instrument collecting and rescue. Soon I hope to dip my toe into lutherie as well.

I actually pulled it out before I replied and there is no white visible at the top or bottom. The binding is clearly tortoise shell. Mrs. Fro. had the chance to A/B the Traditional and the Standard and since there were no differences that mattered to her as a player the absence of any white binding drove her choice.

I did not get out the magnifying glass, and we know my eyesight is suspect but it is possible there is a continuous strip of black and a second one of tortoise shell but definitely no white.

No, all fine, I just thought NH had that BWB purfling between the tortoise binding and the spruce on the F-30 Aragon model.

Can't remember them without it. So I think frono needs to take a picture of Mrs. Fro's guitar binding.
