Killing Me Softly With His Song - Roberta Flack

You're banned.

"Can't Stop Killing You" - Kirsty MacColl

Poor Kirsty, struck down in her prime by a careless boater, who didn't even get brought to justice.

All I Have to do is Dream - Everly Brothers

Check out this version, the timing is so different from how they usually did it.

"All My Only Dreams" - The Wonders

If you remember watching That Thing You Do!, you might recall "All My Only Dreams" was the "serious" song Jimmy was obsessed with recording instead of the catchy, poppy title song. Like all the original music for this film, this song was recorded with a fine-tuned ear for the 1960s sound and style, and comes across exactly as intended: a nice melody and sweet sentiment ruined by overwrought, too-serious delivery. Every late-50s and early-60s rock and roll album had at least a couple of turgid filler tracks like this one.

"The Point!" - Harry Nilsson

Okay, this is not a song, so much as a collection of songs connected by a story, but it pretty much hangs together as a single work, so I'm stretching the rules just a little to include it.

It's charming and wonderful, if a little unfocused. It was made into an equally charming TV animation special, which is worth seeking out too.

Been Caught Stealin' - Jane's Addiction

Right before all the Seattle, Nirvana, Pearl Jam brilliance, chaos and eventual copy cat grunge death, there was Jane's Addiction. They hit a sweet spot, perfectly timed between big hair bands and grunge. For a few years there, they were all alone, on top of the mountain. But nothing gold can stay...

We saw that as a family when it came out in '96, and I don't know who was more enthralled: Things 1 and 2 (who were 9 and 7 at the time), or me. I had a huge crush on Liv Tyler coming out of the theater.

That song (along with "That Thing You Do") was written by the incredibly talented (and now gone - Covid got him early) Adam Schlesinger. His bands - Fountains of Wayne and Ivy, are always in heavy rotation in my listening sessions. Losing him was a big loss to music.

After his death a bunch of artists got together to cover his songs with 100% of proceeds going to MusiCares Covid-19 relief fund.

Good stuff:
