The Jam gets a lot of hate - "for ripping off their betters," as one reviewer put it - but I always liked them. This is a great song no matter whether it wears its 1960s influences on its sleeve or not.

True confession: When I was younger I didn't know "fruit machine" was British English for a casino slot machine. So when I heard this song back in the day, I thought it meant a vending machine for fruit.
