Oh no Coastie, this show went off the air when I was a kid...probably in the late 60's. It was an institution here for a few years. Most of the characters belonged in an institution too. It was funny though.

Laugh IN

Hey West,

Who was the gal, "Ruth Buzzie maybe" used to sit on the park bench next to the old geezer ,WW I veteran, masher. Always wore that horrible spiderweb hairnet down over her forehead. Hilarious skits always ended with her being insulted & bashing the old guy about with her purse.

Coastie kind of reminds me of the old masher character. Don't ya think just a little?

Showing my age

Jeff - It was indeed Ruth Buzzie and the old geezer on the tricycle was Arty Johnson. Laugh-In was the Saturday Night Live of its time. The repertoire cast included the hosts/comedy team of Dick Martin and Dan Rowan, Goldie, English commediene Judy Carne, Henry Gibson (the flower poet), Joanne Worley (sort of the neuvo-Kay Ballard 'loud mouth'), and frequent entertainment (Flip Wilson, Elliot Gould, Johnny Carson) 'non-entertainment' world notables (like politicians and business execs, like Barry Goldwater) the hip and happening thing to be on - usually uttering some of the Laugh-In laugh tags: You bet Your (sweet) Bippy, Here Comes the Judge, I Didn't Know That, "Ver-r-r-r-y Interesting!", Sock it to me, and others that have become part of the vernacular. Wow! Talk about a flood of memories rushing in. Maybe I didn't actually survive the 60's/70's after all. Perhaps I'm just a pasted together casualty who hasn't learned to fall down yet.

....but did I enjoy myself? You bet your sweet bippy!

O, wait...wait!!!!

I just went to the IMDB (Internet Movie Data Base):

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062601/

and looked up Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. The cast revolved and was HUGE, but there are a few laudables necessary to mention:

Regulars included comedic actor Johnny Brown, pre-Family Feud/post Hogan's Heroes Richard Dawson, Partridge family's Dave Madden, actress Eileen Brennan, the announcer was Gary Owen (the voice of Space Ghost), and....never to be forgotten Lili Tomlin (the little girl in the giant rocker giving the world raspberries, the phone operator calling 'Mr. Veedal' - Gore Vidal) - Lorne Michaels of SNL was a writer, and Sammy Davis, Jr., like Flip Wilson, were considered regular guests.

And the old man chatting up Ruth Buzzie on the bench was...Arte Johnson as.....Tyrone F. Horneigh (great name). Benny Hill had little on these folks. Pax!

I never did figure out what a "bippy" was, and I always wondered what made it "sweet".

Goldie did!

Hey, P! Goldie made the bippy sweet....and whatever the bippy was, Goldie made us want one - the best was definitely on. IT was one of those terms that was entirely relative, but the more colourful your idea....the better. dbs

The doldroms

P -- Nope -- We actually opted - for the first time in 30+ years of this band and the one before (which had 3 of the same members) - to take some time off. It's been hard on me - off since mid-June with only some TV tapings here and there - but I've gotten a lot of good playing time in, written a boatload of new tunes and songs (there's always 'the next album' you know), and meticulously prepared for the new album release. I'm a bit tired of seeing all these stacks and boxes of press kits awaiting the CD, but I am blown away by the new album and that will get me through 'til next week when we fly off to Virginia to start the fall schedule. It's still light in August, but then the fall picks up and I'll be happily exhausted when Christmas rolls around. I have one of those strange brains that will not stop, so time off can be seriously bizarre. But like I said - lots of time to play guitar(s) and do all those details that one usually doesn't have time to even consider. I've even polished my age old version of Duane Allman's "Little Martha". How's the weather in your area - hot, humid and daily rain storms, like us? Good to hear from you. All the best...dbs

LOL....a break in the action IS hard on "The Driven"!!!

My wife is like that (German), but me......I'm a Mississippi Boy originally. We don't get in a rush about nothin'!!

The weather....HOT....Humid.....DRY!!!

Driving back from lunch today I commented on how the grass in the fields and on the side of the road is brown and parched, but the grass within 1 foot of the pavement is green. We have had some minor showers that were too small to green things up except where the run-off from highway was enough. Really looks strange.

Seems like Arty Johnson was a German Army officer or something and would always hold his cigarette from the bottom while he proclaimed...."Verrrry interesting" and sometimes he'd throw in, "but not very funny."

P, I can't believe you don't know this. A bippy is one less than a trippy, two less than a quadppy! Must have all started with a monoppy. :)

Laugh In

Other than having some brilliant writing & performances, One of the best things about "Laugh In" was a person could sit down with his family; kids, grandkids, parents & grandparents & everyone was entertained, few were offended.

Maybe a few folks pursuing long term careers in politics may have had reason to get a little steamed on occasion.

A guy's gotta look long & hard to restrict his Television intake to programming of similar quailty.

Music, quality, artistic live performances, where the heck is it? I eat up every live music performance I can find & still spend 92% of my time looking for more. Kind of a horrendous cost for the benefit, about $1500 a year for mid range cable service, maybe that does include the internet access.

One time he said to Ruth Buzzi: "Do you believe in the hereafter?" she said "Yes", "Then you know what I'm here after!" he said , whereupon she whacked him with her purse and he fell off the bench, just like every week.
Talk about politically incorrect shows, how about the Smothers Brothers? And how about Tommy's Guild? :D
