"At 26:35 in this video from Five Watt World, it mentions Jimmy Page purchased a 1971 Guild F-612 12-string guitar from Manny's Music in New York. It was used on "Over the Hills and FarAway" and was later stolen but Page was able to replace her later on."

Oh thanks Ralf, I wondered what this was all about, not being aware of such a documentary...(does it say Page might have a couple to give away to me - seems there's a lot of good guitars involved there - 😇 )

Sorry for my cynicism, but I'd want to see photos, or at least see this info somewhere else. I've read a lot of info on Page's music and his guitars over the years and never heard this before.

Well, that picture in the video *is* an F-612, walrus, but I don't know where the picture came from.

Exactly. Could be from anywhere. Just saying that with all the research and stories and everything about Jimmy Page over the years, including so much of it in his own words and photos, we've never heard this before. A photo of a random Guild is not evidence.

But I'd love to see "proof" and be proved wrong, that would be very cool!

A slight but related veer. Here's a photo of a pick supposedly used by John Lennon.

apr19-689_sm.jpeg

Sold at auction for $1,500 a few years ago. The provenance of it is a letter by a guy named Steve Carr.

Oh, I want to believe it! I pored over all my Beatles stuff and the internet just trying to find a photo to verify it in some way. He sure looks to be playing a small sized pick with that classic "wrist strumming" he does. But I've never seen a photo of an Epiphone "jazz" pick and him in the same place. If you have one, please post it!

So like the guitar Page story in this video, which has no "provenance" at all, I remain cautious.

Ralf, help us!

There's a bit of 12 at the beginning of Over The Hills, but from all the pics I've seen from the sessions from that era, I've yet to see a pic of him w/ any 12 string. I would call the exact 12 used inconclusive, as what Page has said, and what pictures have confirmed, have at times turned out to be two different things. He's known to have been experimental enough...and later protective enough not to ever be too revealing about his methods.

Here's the studio track listing for Over the Hills. The 12 is on track 8.

Most of what he used w/ Zep is well known. (can't say I've ever heard of any Guild confirmed to have been used. The Harmony, yes)
During Zep's heyday, his studio arsenal was somewhat limited, even if also using guitars never seen on any stage. By the time they were recording Houses of The Holy (at several different locations), Page's known 12 string guitars were a Harmony Sovergn, a Fender Electric XII, a Vox Phantom 12, and the Gibson EDS1275 double neck. I've seen pics of all of those being used. Never seen a pic of Page w/ a Guild...ever.

and this is a guy that would show up to sessions in the early 90's w/ a truckload of guitars... like this...
(a few rare pics from my collection😉)
Not a Guild in sight.

Having been a hardcore collector of all things Zep for over 45 years, I'll chalk this one up to, I'll believe it when I see it. And Page's own recollections won't even sway me. :p

To continue the veer I recently read a story about a leather cap alleged to have belonged to Amelia Earhart. There was a plausible family story about how the cap came into their possession but there was no real documentation it had been Earhart's. The owner started looking at photos and and discovered there is a small discipline that provides provenance through photos. The techniques were apparently developed for sports collectables. A uniform that once would have been sold as "probably game worn" would now come with photo documentation that showed the uniform in use at a specific game. The photo documentation is now accepted as provenance in some areas, as the owner of the cap found out when the auction estimate went up dramatically once photos were found of the cap in use.

Great photos! The last one has a Sadowsky electric nylon string which is a cool surprise!

Who is this in the 12 string ad? It almost looks like Jimmy Page but I'm not sure... (and it's not a F-612 obviously).

Yes it could be him, but without any evidence or name's proof I agree, not (quite) sure;

Oh, that's great! A Jimmy Page impersonator? Close, but I'd say that's not him.

If that was really Page, I think we would have heard about it by now - Guild would have been advertising his Guild use all over the place!

Also, if it was him, could they use his likeness without acknowledging him? That seems unlikely.

Maybe a specific agreement ? Like it would not look smart to advertise ? (or maybe he asked too much...?)

Page's known 12 string guitars were a Harmony Sovergn, a Fender Electric XII, a Vox Phantom 12, and the Gibson EDS1275 double neck.
Plus his Brazilian "Giannini GWSCRA12-P Craviola" (on "Tangerine" from Led Zeppelin's third album, and Page also used it on stage for the performance of this song in 1971 and 1972.) and the Manson Triple Neck by Andy Manson (used for the live "Unledded" performance).
