She wouldn't be keeping her shoes on in my house!

We just got new hardwood floors and had a no-shoes policy. My buddy refused to take off his shoes, said "I don't want to mop your floors with my socks. I asked him to wear my crocs then, he wouldn't do that either. At this point I asked him to leave.

Sorry, yeah it's from Wall St Journal.

Basically, the gal says she doesn't want to get her socks dirty on your floor, and that she's sure her shoes are cleaner than your floor.

So basically, she wouldn't be invited into my house.

As a contractor who works in other's homes, I'm in this scenario often, as there has been a spike over the last 20 years in the number of people who do the 'no shoes in the house' thing. Out of respect, I've been carrying an inside only, clean pair of Cons to work in for a long time now, but won't go shoeless in someone else's home.

If you tell them you have incurable foot fungus, no one will ask you to.

My friends and family can wear their choice of footwear in my house. They and the enjoyment of their company are far more valuable than floor coverings.
Yes. It's a case of us serving our floor coverings vs. them serving us!! They work for me. I'll tell THEM who walks here.... all are welcome.

It's not about the floor covering but about cleaning. If the person who tracks stuff in accepts the responsibility for cleaning up whatever they bring in, wherever it is found and within a reasonable time, then it doesn't matter whether shoes are on or off. But if the person who is going to do the cleaning requests it so as to make their job easier then I'm fine with that. Why should I get bent out of shape because I am making less work for someone else?

I also am somewhat cynical about people who insist their shoes are clean. Sometimes they are right but often they are wrong and someone still has to clean up after them.

You could argue that folks are too obsessed about cleanliness but "my house, my rules" seems to have some application.

In practice I don't ask visitors to take off their shoes. I do ask them if their shoes are clean and they can decide whether they want to take off their shoes or keep them on. There is some psychology to that because if they say their shoes are clean and they aren't there is an opportunity for embarrassment that some people will avoid.

I'm in NYC and since we're using the subway every day, shoes typically stay in the mudroom. I once had a rat run over my feet on a subway platform, and have stepped on one as well (those shoes got disinfected!). And the subway is just pretty filthy in general; there's not a lot of budget to keep it clean I guess, and it's running 24/7. A lot of people I know in the city insist that shoes come off, and I think most of us cite the subway as the reason. The sidewalks and all the dogs' business is another reason. But I'm in a shared apartment and I personally wouldn't be as strict with guests- we can always clean once they leave.

I'm not sure how I got this habit, but my tendency is to take my shoes off when visiting. Usually the host says "no need", but it's a habit. Although if I'm visiting someone I know has a "dirty" house/floors, I leave them on!

The key is to always have decent socks on!

Is that also a no dogs policy?

The B&B we stayed at in Pasadena had a no shoes policy. It's a real pain in the butt, IMO. We won't be staying there again. Our major remodel in North Idaho included all new hardwood floors. No need to remove items of clothing to come inside!

On the one hand, it's terrible to hear because, in this case, I would like to sympathize with your socks. It's not nice when your wife tries to find a better place for your shoes or your socks. I know what I'm talking about. I have encountered this several times being with my ex-wife. She was constantly trying to fit my air jordans 1 mid in the little nightstand in our hallway. I always told her they didn't belong there, and my wife wouldn't even hear me. I guess that's why she's an ex-wife now, haha. Anyway, you have to show the actions that you are the master of the house and your shoes will be where you want them.

I'm in old vacant buildings, office, warehouse or shopping centers every day in 5 cities across NYS. I'm not certain but I think I avoid most crud.

I don't like the idea that my wife insists that I remove my apparently disgusting contaminated Allen Edmonds ...but I like my wife. So......off they go!

This is an interesting choice for a first post!

I was on a flight from Detroit to Japan; apparently some guy took off his shoes to air out his feet, he must not have changed his socks in a month. It smelled like rotting beef carcasses. He stunk up the whole coach section of the aircraft. I asked the flight attendant to tell this guy to put his shoes back on, which she did, thank goodness.

After which, I'll demand my brontosaurus burger be delivered to my chair in the study with a martini...and a smile dammit!
