Where I grew up, you never wore shoes in the house. More recently, we replaced our carpeting with engineered wood flooring throughout our house. As a result everyone developed pains in their feet and ankles. So now all have to wear indoor house shoes/slippers. The elders keep forgetting to swap out their shoes when they leave the house. So I now have to hot mop the floors on a regular basis. Progress! 😖

Here's something that worked well for me. I hate street shoes being worn in the house, though I don't insist guests remove their shoes ( I just grin and bear it). My wife, however had no hangups about wearing her street shoes into the house, until . . . . When we were out together somewhere, I started directing her attention to those big slimy snot wads (we call them "hockers") on the pavement. When it had her attention I simply said, "that's what your tracking in when you wear street shoes in the house." She has been MUCH more attentive to slipping out of her out-and-about shoes when she comes in now.

My philosophy is a home is meant to be lived in. It’s not a museum.

I had a good friend growing up who’s mother insisted on the no shoes thing, but also full plastic covers on all the furniture, and you had to brush yourself off before coming inside. She and the live in grandmother were actually militant about anything or anyone not 100% clean coming into the house. Naturally we kids hated going over and never played there. I felt sorry for him.

Yeah, take off your muddy boots or shoes, so it isn’t tracked all over the house, but otherwise no worries and just be respectful. Dogs, kids, family gatherings, life… The floors are going to get scratches, things are going to wear out. Find a happy medium. Not gonna sweat it. I’ll refinish the floors and make everything shiny right before I sell the place.

I never understood, and never will, the whole "cover the furniture with plastic" thing. And I've seen lampshades covered, too!

I guess they are pre-planning for when they are old and incontinent...

I stopped wearing shoes in the house when I met my girlfriend (now wife). In her culture shoes don’t get worn inside. After 32 years, now I think wearing shoes in the house is just gross. Especially laying on the bed with shoes on. Yuk!! Eew and ever look at the sticky floor in an airport bathroom in the stall? No way am I tracking that in the house!!

We have four dogs. They run through all kinds of mud and muck and, as of today, thawed out poop that was hidden under the snow....ok I missed a few. Of course they are allowed in the house with only a slight carpet run off....but Me? Noooooo!

I worked in a cold warehouse for five years when I was younger in the family business. Standing on concrete for 8-10 hours a day the chill really gets to your lower joints. The men who had been there 15-20 years had it bad. Even though I can routinely back pack 10+ miles a day my feet still feel the effects of those 5 years. I like heavy shoes/boots and would wear them inside...if I could.

What is funny is when my daughters friends come over. I've known most for 10+ years when they were in grammer school. "Mr. Bill" was always in the water with them, throwing them around... a much larger stronger person. Now they have a little grin on their faces...I'm getting older and somewhat shorter at 5' 6".....The little twerps tower over me now, especially when I'm in socks. Even my wise arsed daughter.

If I walked from the gross things on the floor places some of you have mentioned straight into my house, I could see the desire to remove the shoes. But, none of those gross floors are within many miles of my house. I walk on blacktop and concrete and dirt before I get home even if I were on one of those places. I worry more about the tortoise turds and dog bombs in my back yard more than any of those listed shoe cling-ons. Heck the worst thing I find in my carpet are " goat head " stickers! Ouch.

Yeah, my Mom was a clean freak too. I never wanted to have my friends over, at least in the house.

The problem with a lot of the newer "engineered" wood flooring is that it is a one-shot deal.

Tommy

Very true and that does make a difference. My house is old with real 3/4 oak and maple flooring so it can be sanded multiple times.
